Trust and transparency

Trust and transparency

These two words are often used together, but the relationship between them is not so simple. Like any other relationship, this one is also quite complicated because often people mix the two thinking it’s the same.

‘Trust me’ - what does it mean? It’s the desire to gain the confidence of people. But what it really means is that the person is asking for  the freedom to operate freely, without being questioned.

Whether we agree or not, the truth is that we all like to control our immediate environment. We find it extremely difficult to allow someone else to take charge. The word ‘trust’ comes in when we choose not to impose our thoughts or ideas, and instead celebrate the thinking of others. However this takes confidence, a willingness to get it wrong and patience.

At work, ‘trust’ isn’t mainly a question of someone’s character, it’s also a matter of experience, thinking, sophistication and performance.

If ‘trust’ is a question of patience  and confidence, then what is transparency?

Transparency is not a substitute for trust. It makes trust stronger. Earlier, people at work didn’t question the decisions which were made by management. But today, people expect complete transparency, and no longer accept instructions without proper reasoning or justification. With the rise of social media, people share and express their feelings and opinions openly. If companies are not transparent to their people then they may face a backlash.

Undoubtedly, both transparency and trust are crucial for companies and brands. It’s not just because it’s good for their work culture – it's vital to their growth and success.
