Trust REALLY matters in Filipino workplaces.

Trust REALLY matters in Filipino workplaces.

Starting at a new workplace is nerve-wracking for most people.

So imagine you’re an offshore worker:

You log on every day and work for a company located in another country.

And even though you speak it well, English isn’t your first language.

That would be pretty daunting, right?

For Filipinos, the cultural norm is that you contend with all of this, while never losing FACE.

That can become a huge problem for YOU.

Why?

Because it means employees often won't open up to you as a foreign employer - sometimes even after years of loyal service.

So, how do you get the best from your staff working remotely from the Philippines?

By understanding the big cultural differences between Australian and Filipino workplace culture.

And this is the BIGGEST one:

Status and hierarchy are BFDs - even more so than in other Asian countries.

That’s because Filipino culture is inherently SOCIAL.

So status is not just about money:?

It’s who you know, who you work for, and how good you are at what you do.

You need to show that you get this if you expect your new recruit to “fit in”.

Here’s how:

  • Integrating them properly into the business and showing them that you WANT to invest in them will help them really start to believe you value them.
  • Always acknowledge what they do WELL.
  • Help them understand their VALUE as a team member.
  • Assuring them that it’s OKAY to make mistakes and to ask questions - as often as necessary.

Integration is the key

Here are 3 tips I’ve learnt from my experience do it properly - right from day 1:

  1. My Australian staff train the new Filipino staff?
  2. My local staff explain about the benefits that the new offshore team member can bring to them - before the Filipino worker starts.
  3. Everyone understands that everyone else's role is equally important.

The thing is, you can’t make them feel as if they’re failing. They're gonna go through changes, they're gonna fall, they're gonna fail, there will be mistakes.

In short: Let your Filipino workers see things differently. Nurture them. Be there for them.

It’s up to YOU to create the perfect environment for them to win.

In the long run, it’ll pay off big time!

Warmly,

Chris Jankulovski

It's tricky at first, but once you get used to working with Filipinos, it's worth the investment of time! Stick with it ?

When you go to the Philippines and understand just how much work means over there, this will really sink in. Respect is everything at work!
