Trust – the key ingredient …

Making Business Sustainable * Individual Development * Team Development * Leadership Development * Organisational Development * Succession Planning * Your Legacy
On two separate occasions recently I had the distinct impression that someone I was paying to provide a service, had other, more important priorities. They were not acting in my best interest. This is someone I’ve been dealing with for years, whom I trusted and suddenly the rules of engagement had changed. Within a blink the trust was? gone – also the relationship leaving me feeling vulnerable, disappointed, angry and scrambling for someone else to ensure that important financial functions and reporting happened in time.?
I love author, speaker & trainer Ian Hatton’s explanation. He says not having trust, is like not having air. You don’t notice it until it’s cut off.? Like air, trust brings energy. If there’s one thing good leaders understand, it’s how reliability, ethics and integrity build trust – with intentionality. When a leader does more than listen, but also hears and asks meaningful questions and helps team members grow their careers, they’re not just acting in the best interests of the individual, but also of the organisation. When one has a manager who takes the time to get to know you, understand what drives you and what makes you unique, you feel important, have a role to play and you become reluctant to disappoint them. Trust puts heart into a relationship, engages the quiet quitters, speeds up processes and improves efficiency because it awakens genius. This does not happen by accident. It’s intentionally modelled by the leader. It’s also fragile because trust takes time to build and can be destroyed in an instant. Leadership is the ability to get people to cooperate willingly. People only cooperate willingly when they trust the leader. In an environment where there is mutual trust, employees are happy and motivated, they care about the work they do, take better care of customers and stay with the company longer.
?Leaders cultivate culture and set the tone with their words, actions, examples and what they’re prepared to tolerate. If you want to boost performance, start by nurturing a culture where your team feels supported, included, trusted and valued. According to Justin Wright, blogger, here’s how:?
1. Listen more. Ask for feedback and act on it. Show you heard.
2. Build trust. Be transparent, keep promises and show your team you trust them.
3. Recognize efforts by saying "thank you." Celebrate all wins, big and small.
4. Support growth by offering training, helping with career paths and encouraging advancement. This shows you acting in their best interests.
5. Prioritize the well-being of your team by offering flexible hours – ensure they don't burn out.
6. Encourage collaboration by creating a sense of community where everyone belongs.
7. Lead by example. Be kind, fair and honest. With these steps, you can transform your workplace - or protect the great culture you already have.
It's not just good for your people, but good for your business, too. If you look after your people, they’ll look after your business. Culture matters. Make yours count.
