Trust Issues: Building a Marketplace in Greece
When we started Vendora , I thought I was prepared for the challenges of building a C2C marketplace in a new country. I was in for a surprise! The biggest hurdle wasn't the language barrier or the notorious Greek bureaucracy – it was something far more fundamental: trust.
Trust is a critical factor in any society, influencing everything from daily interactions to economic growth. In Greece, there is a unique challenge when it comes to trust. Not only do Greeks distrust banks, media, and political institutions, the World Values Survey reveals that only 8.4% of Greeks feel that most people can be trusted, a significantly lower percentage compared to 57% in the Netherlands. This trust deficit isn't just a cultural quirk; it's a critical economic factor. Think about it: every time you buy a souvlaki, book a ferry ticket, or negotiate a business deal, you're taking a leap of faith. In a low-trust environment, these leaps become more like cautious tip-toes..
I've seen how this plays out:
It's not that Greeks are inherently less trustworthy – far from it! It's just that the systems and experiences that build societal trust haven't been as strong here.
So, there I was, trying to build a C2C marketplace in a country where strangers view each other with suspicion. Talk about a challenge! But it's been the most rewarding journey of my life.
At Vendora, we're not just creating a marketplace; we're on a mission to rebuild trust in Greek commerce and beyond. We've seen how quickly trust can erode in other sectors, particularly in politics where a single misstep can undo years of progress. Our approach is different. We believe in building trust methodically and consistently, with every transaction adding to a foundation of reliability.
Here's how we're making it happen:

It hasn't been easy. It isn’t just a list of features that can simply be copied. Trust is like a plant – it needs the right environment, constant care, and a lot of patience to grow. There are no shortcuts.
And you know what? It's working. We're seeing things that seemed impossible in Greece just a few years ago:
Thousands of reviews on our App Store and Play Store pages praise Vendora for providing a safe place to trade.
It's not just about the numbers, though. It's the stories. Like Maria, who turned her hobby into a thriving online business, or Yannis, who furnished his entire apartment through Vendora when he moved back to Greece.
We're not done yet – not by a long shot. Building trust is a long game, but the payoff is immense. Not just for Vendora, but for society as a whole.
I believe that by creating these pockets of trust, we're contributing to a bigger change. It's not about making Greece more "Dutch" – Greece has a fantastic culture that doesn't need changing. It's about unleashing the incredible potential that exists here by providing tools for trust and trade to flourish.
So, here's my question to you: What's your experience? Why has Greece become one of the least trusting societies in Europe? How do you think we can foster more trust? I'd love to hear your thoughts and stories. Every great change starts with a conversation.

3 个月Mooi te lezen. Dit soort verhalen over de hobbels van innovatie zijn veel interessanter dan de gladde successtories die je in de boeken leest.
