T is for?Trust

For the last month I have taken you through the first four letters of the QUIET framework of Finance Business Partnering?

The final, and possible the most important part of QUIET is the letter T.

T stands for Trust.

When we say Trust we mean your relationships with non finance.?

How strong are they and how connected to them are you both personally and professionally.

I learnt the hard way that?you will be way more efficient and effective in an organisation if you have strong relationships.

I spent many years being successful working in and within finance teams.

But as soon as I took on a role where I was working with non finance teams, my approach and style was found out.

When you are working cross functionally if you don't have strong relationships people don't tell you everything.

They don't answer your questions transparently.

They don't share information with you.

And the worst case, they bring you in at the end as an after thought. When its too late for you to contribute anything menaingful.

And that is a slow and frustrating place to be.

Get it right and the opposite happens. Everything speeds up.

They do answer your questions.

They do share information with you.

And they bring you in at the start because your input matters

And it doesn't happen because you are the smartest person in the room.

It comes because people feel safe and comfortable with you in the room.

If they don't it doesnt matter how bright or right you are.

So next time you aren't getting what you want from your non finance colleagues ask yourself....how is my relationship with this person and do they trust me?

If the answer is no.... you have some work to do if you want things to speed up.
