I moved to Italy in 2007. I was stunned and amazed that this once great country had elected a man like Silvio Berlusconi to lead their nation. A billionaire misogynist who had used his enormous wealth to bully himself into the nation's highest political office was an embarrassment. While it was often difficult to find people who said they really believed in him, he actually won three national elections. I felt truly sad for the country I came to love. Thank god, I naively thought, the US political system is replete with 'checks and balances.' A Berlusconi could never be elected in America. Or could he?
In the summer of 2015 Donald Trump started gaining headlines as a candidate for the Presidency. Everyone I knew in America discounted him and said he had no chance. My wife, Rita, came up with the term “Trumpusconi”. I thought it was brilliant and bought the URL. But I didn’t fully believe this would ever be a serious thing. It was a joke.
