Trump’s Budget Proposal and Mental Health
The National Alliance on Mental Health as well as several mental health advocacy groups maintain that President Trump’s proposed budget would dramatically slash funding to those who can least afford mental health services. Mary Giliberti, CEO of NAMI says it slashes more than $600 billion from Medicaid over ten years. “This will devastate mental health services, especially for children and adults with the most severe mental illnesses.†says Gilberti.
In addition, Trump’s budget carves $356 million dollars from the National Institute on Mental Health and strips nearly $400 million from mental health and substance abuse programs. Mr. Trump’s American Health Care Act proposes even more draconian measures.
Our Note: Protocol and history dictate that White House budgets are, for the most part, DOA in legislative chambers. Most Americans are counting on the adults in the U.S. Senate to gut this template and rewrite a proposal that safeguards those most in need. This is applicable to the AHCA act recently passed in the House. It is imperative that we contact our representatives to express our opinion on these issues.
