Trump v. NFL: The Backlash and the Business
Keeping Score host Rick Horrow and I got on the phone early Sunday evening-- him at an airport and me at home in Brooklyn -- to discuss not the political but the financial implications of President Trump's call for the firing or suspension of any NFL player who knelt during the national anthem. The stakes, financially, were high and the unified response historic.
I made the points that the owners, when faced with a collision of their likely personal and financial interests, chose their financial ones and how that illustrated the changing nature of their relationships with their players.
Rick talked a bit about how owners were seeing the whole situation and what he was hearing from more than a few of them on Sunday morning. At the end of the day, his thought was that how the league, players unions and owners handled the controversy was something that would make their franchises worth more in the long run.
