Whether you like the man or you can't stand him due to his unethical, illegal, and bizarre behaviors, there is no denying that Trump has shown one thing for a fact - he is a brand building genius.
How else could someone not qualified for the most difficult job in the world land that job? And keep it while destroying a lot of what holds the country together? Successful brand building. Rather than hate the man, it's better to learn from him. Now, I'm not saying that anyone should lie about their abilities. Absolutely not. Because once you have the job or role or client, then your b*tt is on the line if you can't deliver. You need to be able to deliver. But also, it's a happier and less stressful life if you don't misrepresent yourself.
But if you have the abilities or service and the only thing you're missing is how to convince your target audience - well, that's where Trump's genius in this one area can greatly help you.
1. Speak the Language of Your Target Audience
Trump's primary target audience is the everyday American who are not first or second generation immigrants, and he speaks that language well. He's been very clear in his own mind about what the everyday American wants to hear and the topics they want to hear about.
Were he speaking to a group of potential investors in a boardroom, he's likely to change (in his good old days) what he talks about and the words he uses. People think he's an idiot, and he is when it comes to politics and running a country, however he understands human nature and what drives people. He also knows how to manipulate people.
His Republic Party was also one of his target audiences, but that audience was easily won over by him. He promised them wealth, cache, and obedience to their approach.
2. Always Believe in Your Product - No Matter What
Whether the product is yourself as a job seeker or your service or physical product, you always have to believe in your product. And you always sing its praises. No matter what. It's fine to internally be wanting to continually improve, iterate, and respond to your market. However, your communication should always show your deep belief in you or your service with zero doubts or wavering. You do not need to have a perfect product for it to change or positively affect lives. It simply needs to solve a significant pain point for your target audience.
3. Consistency in Your Message Over Time - No Matter What
The thing that many suffer from is a lack of confidence in what they are selling. Whether they are selling their background to a prospective employer or are selling a service or product. Many tend to believe that just around the corner will be someone with a better background or product. This lack of confidence makes you constantly change your message.
While it's good to experiment with different types of messaging, the core values you offer to an employer or clients should not be changeable. Otherwise, this means that you don't really know what your true value add is.
Well, yes, Trump has frequently changed his tune. But the message that has not changed since he was running for office and to this date is his core platform: Make America Great & We're Going to Build a Wall. While none of this has happened, that's doesn't change the fact that having one consistent message over the years has Trump seem like he's accomplishing a lot to his loyal supporters.
For you, figure out what your true core values and value add are. You are unique, and thus, you need to figure out what you offer that's unique. Then maintain that message throughout your job search or throughout your sales pitches. Certainly you keep tweaking your resume or cover letters, but your core values and value add never does.
Steps:
a. Determine what your unique value add is
b. Determine what your message is to portray that value add
c. Keep tweaking and testing the messaging that portrays your value add - until you hit the right messaging - including for prospective employers!

4. Speak Your Message Frequently
What is the one thing Trump does well? Speak and speak frequently - hitting over and over on his message. Whether we want to hear him or not. He hits us up everywhere - twitter, facebook, youtube, the local news - even when he's not welcome!
While I'm not suggesting you annoy your target audience, I am suggesting you speak your message frequently - using all possible platforms. For a product or service, this is fairly straightforward. But if you're trying to reach prospective employers, aside from approaching hiring managers directly, you'll want to exponentially increase your visibility to them. Leave intelligent, thoughtful comments on hiring mangers' LinkedIn posts and on the companies' LinkedIn posts; post meaningful posts in LinkedIn groups where prospective hiring managers might be also hanging out.
5. Present Your Future Results As Done
When Trump speaks about what he's going to do, he never speaks with any hesitation or lack of belief. When he spoke about building towers, you could almost see it. You knew it was going to happen. And the same even with the phrase: Make America Great Again. Even now, after all the lies he's piled on us, when he says that - you have no choice but to believe him. Because he himself believes it beyond doubt that it will happen. Whether it actually does is irrelevant to him.
How to use this approach for your benefit, whether it's in building your business or even job searching: you have to believe within yourself - completely - that you are the only and best option for a prospective employer, for a prospective client. Presenting yourself as one of many good options, while might make you seem like a humble person, isn't serving you. You don't even have to say much on this - but if you wholeheartedly FEEL within you that you are the only solution for their problems - it will come across to your audience.?

4 年Fred Trump fabricated his personal brand as a deal maker which then carried him onto decades of business failures, Mark Burnett then rebranded him as a successful tycoon, another fabrication for the apprentice reality show. Trump has only played the part others “branded for him”. As for the other points in the article, they could also be attributed to despots, autocrats & dictators. So they must have branding “genius” as well.

4 年If you were to take politics out of the discussion it would be easier to see. NBC paid him to do a show pretty much about branding yourself. We can say his dad gave him money but how long ago was that? You can say he went bankrupt many many times but he still was able to use his name after each bankruptcy. Look at all the celebrities and politicians that came to his many weddings because they could be seen there and they could rub elbows with other muckety-mucks one rung higher than themselves! Do I like Turmp? Well everyday that goes by...

4 年When praising anyone that I don't personally know, the first thing I consider is their history of ethical and moral decision-making. Example: IF I were to make this statement: Even Charles Manson is a "nice guy" once in a while. (You can surely deduce the outcome of whether I would actually follow through with a post of that genre, right?) That's all I'll say about that.
