Trump stance will force NATO countries to spend more, whether elected or not

The current geopolitical landscape is turbulent, to say the least.

Wars between Russia and Ukraine, Israel and Hamas, and attacks on ships in the Red Sea by Houthi rebels – the list continues.?

In times of instability, European NATO members have largely been reassured by the alliance’s “collective defence” policy, whereby an attack on one member is an attack on them all. For smaller NATO members, the prospect of the world’s most powerful military coming to the rescue provided some comfort.

But what if the US were no longer a part of NATO? Despite the words of former, and perhaps future, US president Donald Trump, it seems unthinkable. Nonetheless, Trump’s anti-NATO rhetoric may serve as a wake-up call for European NATO members, many of which have been underspending on defence.

It seems the time has come for European NATO members to step up and take ownership of their own defence and meet (or surpass) the 2%-of-GDP target outlined by the alliance.
