Will Trump Change the Food Policy?
With everyone anxious to see what changes are to come with the new presidency, the food industry is wondering how food policy and regulations will change under Trump. Will it only be safe to eat at quick-serve restaurants like KFC and McDonalds….places Trump enjoys? Hmmmm…...He enjoys those restaurants because he feels the food is “safer”. They are only safer because these multi-national businesses have established several SOP’s and GMP’s which focus on food safety.
Whether he takes away some of the power of the FDA or not, don’t you think it’s our responsibility to protect public health? Do we only practice food safety because we may face fines, lawsuits, and bad press? ...or is it because it is the right thing to do? Call me crazy, but I think employees should wash their hands before returning to work whether there is a required sign in the restroom or not. As responsible business owners, food safety training and practices should be a top priority. I agree that sometimes we are over-regulated. Honestly, I don’t need a law to tell me to wear a helmet while on a motorcycle or a seatbelt while driving. I value self-preservation and I think I’m smarter than that. But, some people won’t and don’t follow regulations even when a law is in place.
"...don't you think it's our responsibility to protect public health?"
In a fact sheet that was released and later removed from Trump’s website, he suggested that FDA regulations were too controlling over “the soil farmers use, farm and food production hygiene, food packaging, food temperatures and even what animals may roam which fields in when.” Even though the sheet was removed, will these ideas come back to change food policies? If there is less regulation by the FDA, will the health and safety of Americans still be ensured?
I’m a little nervous as to what would happen if our supply chain is given too much freedom. Will they cut corners and put the public at risk? Let’s watch and see.
Be safe my friends!
