In a pivotal discussion on the future of U.S. ports, President-elect Donald Trump took to X and voiced strong opposition to automation, emphasizing its impact on American workers, particularly longshoremen. After meeting with the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) leadership, Trump argued that while automation is marketed as a cost-saving tool, the damage it causes to families and communities far outweighs its financial benefits.
Meanwhile, the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) responded with a statement advocating for a balanced approach. While expressing gratitude for Trump’s commitment to American jobs, USMX stressed the necessity of modern technology to improve worker safety, port efficiency, and supply chain resilience. They highlighted that increased port capacity leads to higher compensation for ILA members, as their earnings are tied to the volume of goods moved.
As the debate over automation and modernization continues, both sides appear aligned on the need to protect and grow American jobs while ensuring the ports remain competitive in a global economy. However, whether or not they will come to an agreement before the current contract expires January 15th is still to be determined.
