“During the examination, I determined there was no friendship between Mr. Trudeau and the Kielburgers, nor was Mr. Trudeau involved in any discussions with them leading to the decisions.”
Dion said he is satisfied Trudeau didn’t attempt to steer the contract toward the charity.
“The evidence also shows that Mr. Trudeau had no involvement in ESDC’s recommendation that WE administer the CSSG. I am satisfied that Mr. Trudeau did not give preferential treatment to WE.”
Given the partisan savagery around the so-called "WE Scandal" it will be interesting to see what happens next - will anything be learned - that the longstanding opaque practice (by all governments and parties past and present) of giving out giant grants to umbrella organizations is problematic in itself (it doesn't require conflict of interest to be a bad practice) but also this "affair" revealed that very few MPs and even fewer Canadians understand even the basics of charitable organizations and how they are structured and regulated.
The WE organization and generally most charities that "make the news" are nothing like the organizations in your own community going about their work of caring for people. But we are all under the same archaic laws that are in desperate need of reform. This includes the need for new "categories" so that an organization like WE can pursue their type of work, and organizations that are delivering services in communities can do their type of work, and it isn't all confused, with ignorant politicians flailing about, insulting each other, and creating public distrust about "charities" when 99% of them are just trying to do their best in the face of unprecedented need and dealing with wage suppression by provincial government legislation, loss of revenues, and more.
Instead of scoring cheap points with the worst of your political supporters, whatever extremes they represent, do some reading. Do some learning. Do some listening. And come back with solutions that SUPPORT the charitable sector instead of tearing it down with ignorant comments. If you aren't going to help us, at least do no harm.
