True versus Truth

Early in my career, a mentor helped me to reset my cloudy thinking with a straightforward question.
I had just received some mixed-bag information—lots of data and opinions. And I was confused and stressed all of it.
'So what are you making this mean?' they said.
I thought I was not making it mean anything. I am just responding to the data.
Their question felt a bit judgey. I was a bit indignant.
They pointed out that I was stressed and making decisions while mixing facts and opinions.
Interpretation of data and information is often part of your job.
However, depending on your veiled thoughts about the information, you may be unconsciously lacing fear into those facts and thinking they are the truth.
It might feel true to you. But that doesn't make it the truth.
In just the last week, I heard the following fear-based opinions stated as TRUTH.
Getting a job based my age is going to be impossible.
No one hires between Thanksgiving and February.
(Editors note: 3 of my clients landed new jobs between November and today, January, 11, 2023. All with multiple 6-figure salaries. One was 44 years old. The other 2 were over 50 years of age).
It’s completely normal to have thoughts that are laced with fear.
Separate story from fact. True from Truth. Just don't believe everything you think.
