The true value of tradition
Barons Of Barossa - Declaration of Vintage

The true value of tradition

As the 2023 vintage begins in the Barossa it is marked by the declaration of Vintage this coming Sunday 19th February. Its an important date on the Barossa calendar being the day that symbolises not only the official start of vintage but the day that the Valley honours its Winemaker & Viticulturist of the year and pays its respect to one of its past leaders, this year one of its founding Barons the late Colin Gramp.

From their beginnings almost 50 years ago the philanthropic “Wine Fraternity” Barons of Barossa have very much had the community at its heart. The founding charter they laid down was "to promote?and foster?the Barossa, its wine, viticulture and gastronomy, to help?maintain the heritage, lifestyle and traditions of this great region".

Today its guiding board “The Grand Council” continues to?include wine making luminaries such as Louisa Rose (the Grand Master) Chris Hatcher, Grant Burge, Troy Kalleske, Joanne Irvine and Stephen Henschke, further, amongst its near 100 strong membership the list of Barossa wine making legends and people that have contributed to making the Barossa such a cohesive community today is something to see.

The declaration event will begin at 11am with Barons attired in full regalia for a service to bless the first grapes at Tabor Lutheran Church in Tanunda before a short colourful procession followed by the declaration ceremony proper. Yes it is a bit quaint and old fashioned but in keeping tradition alive the declaration of vintage helps to reminds people of the importance of those things outlined in the charter ?and the cycles of nature that help this region prosper,

In a world that is rapidly changing, more than ever we need to celebrate those things that make our communities and where we live something to value, something that offers a different view of the world, one where wine, food, culture community and friendship continue to be truly valued. So, if you are around the Barossa this weekend, take the time to connect with this event and reflect on the things that make life special.

As we say in the Valley …. “Glory to Barossa” ?
