The true value of FIKA

Why do most of my articles start with the enjoyment of nature, food, and beverage? Life to me is about bringing harmony and joy, and what better way to combine wonderful pockets of fun into time spent with family outdoors, than with a FIKA?

Fika? Are the Norsemen bringing another Hygge concept to our front door? Not at all, we come with cinnamon buns and dark roasted filter coffee, and plenty of it. And why? Simple, we love togetherness and efficiency, and not everything needs to be flat-packed. Hospitality is the same. It is all about togetherness and joy.

How to Fika and get the most out of this strange habit.

A typical Swedish tradition where you take 10-15 minutes out of your schedule to enjoy a cup of coffee (ok, Tea will do as well), and a pastry. Ideally, this should be a homemade warm cinnamon bun, but other pastries do work. It is the concept that counts.

It is so much more than just a cup of kaffe (coffee). It is a ritual about giving yourself a moment to take a break, reflect, and socialise. It is about sitting down with friends, family, or colleagues, and creating togetherness. At the workplace, it is about brainstorming without prejudice, getting buy-in for ideas, and creating positive vibes, harmony, and efficiency.

The best thing about Fika is that you can have it anytime. In the morning, afternoon, or just evening Fika to help you wind down before bed. Although, if you have an evening Fika, try a savoury oat cake instead of the cinnamon bun.

When having a Fika, the rule is not to rush. Relax, socialise, and reflect. Enjoy a sweet treat, or a savoury one, rest your feet and body and enjoy the company. Or, just have a Fika by yourself, watching the world pass you by as you contemplate your next challenge or what made your day great.

And when you have finished your Fika, look back at what a wonderful moment you just spent away from the rush of daily life. You are now ready to take the world by storm, thanks to Fika.

Why is this relevant?

We spend roughly a third of our life working, chasing the next challenge, trying to be better, getting others to understand why we are great candidates for the perfect role, and trying to get others to believe in us. So, this week’s focus is simple.

Be The Change, enjoy the Fika. Socialising over a Fika at work can improve your ability to drive cultural change in a more efficient way and improve buy-in from stakeholders when you are delivering your messaging. Try it, it may have a positive impact. Or keep on banging your head against the wall and wonder why it hurts.

If not now, when? Be The Change

Note – all comments and opinions in my articles are true reflections of reality, either general, industry-specific, or company-specific. I encourage full buy-in from all stakeholders, and that you engage with nationwide collaborators. My milestones are defined by how I can drive awareness and change. If I only can change one person’s engagement, that is one more than none.?

My strategy is to deliver change in an engaging, positive, financially rewarding, and sustainable manner. If I can use these skills to earn a living, amazing. I am more interested in joining hospitality organisations that are honest in their ethical beliefs and want to partake in delivering exceptional fiscal and emotional results.?
