True, but tough to share....

True, but tough to share....

We are a blended family with 6 children – adults, young adults, and one remaining teenager. Three of our children work in our business, Conveyance Solutions.

One of our children has struggled with addiction since high school. It has been an incredibly painful and challenging journey. We have shed many tears and lost much sleep. In the last 6 weeks this child was violently assaulted requiring 60 staples for a knife wound from shoulder to hip, had a separate encounter with a police officer that required hospitalization due to concussion, and thankfully, is currently in residential treatment for addiction and trauma.?

Just this past Friday, we were shocked to learn that after only 2 weeks in residential care, and as we near our out-of-pocket maximum (of somewhere between $16,000 and $32,000 – the billing is so complex we are not really sure), insurance is stating “in-patient care is not necessary for this individual”.?

Concurrently paperwork arrives in our mailbox and emails in our inbox that seem designed for enhancing confusion and ambiguity. Inevitably final paperwork will show up in months or years to come that tallies the "final costs" and we will end up with more out-of-pocket costs.

Every month our companies write a check for $15,000+ to a large insurance provider in order to provide an “excellent” health care plan for our team of 24 people. We're a small company and have offered benefits before we were required to do so by law. Why? Because it is important for us to know that our team and their families are well cared for, particularly when they are most vulnerable in times of physical and emotional need.?

And yet . . . when the time comes to use the benefits, they are often inadequate and far from “excellent”. While we pay more and more every year, the benefits continue to decrease. The only priority for insurance appears to be profit maximization. Genuine care and “health” seem to be completely absent from the equation.

In speaking with family business owners I know our story is not unusual.?

That’s why we are hosting an upcoming webinar with national healthcare experts. We believe in the power of the family business community and we know that together, we might be able to change the equation.

Join us on Tuesday July 30th at 11 AM PT for an open conversation. (Link in comments.)

Hi Allie, thank you for sharing your personal story and how healthcare has failed your child in the treatment of his addiction. Many, unfortunately, believe that addiction should not be a covered benefit due to it being "self-inflicted" and patients should just "stop using".

Allie Taylor, PhD - This is a lot! There are some things to know - and we can talk about those privately. The most important one, I'd like to share here: NEVER, EVER PAY A BILL WITHOUT A MATCHING EOB. EVER. I am not saying that you shouldn't pay providers. You should and in a timely manner. However, let your insurer reconcile, adjudicate the claim first. Then pay what they say you owe. If you start there, most of the rest, but not all - especially in a situation like this - will resolve itself. Good wishes to all
