A True Story About Why You Should Never Get Up On Your Dreams

Something Silly:

Jack Ma is worth 20+ billion dollars with a B, but did you know:

  • He applied 10 times for Harvard and got rejected.
  • He applied for 30 jobs in his hometown and got rejected by everyone.
  • He applied for a job at KFC with another 23 people, and all of them were accepted, but not him.
  • He tried to get into the police force, and 4 out of 5 applicants were accepted, but not Ma.
  • Ma and his cousin once waited two-plus hours for an interview to be a server in a four-star hotel, despite the lower score his cousin, got in but Ma was rejected again.
  • In 2001, he went to raise $5 million from venture capitalists in the USA and got rejected.

Something Serious:

There was a 9th grader down in the San Antonio area who was attempting to make his HS swim team. Things weren't coming easily for him. Eventually after a few weeks of struggling he was summoned by his Coach to the pool deck after his practice.

His Mom was standing beside him when the Coach told the 9th grader "It would probably be a good idea if he were to find another sport."?

?Most people would have been devastated by news like that.

But as the 9th grader and his Mom walked off that pool deck that afternoon and he looked at his Mom and said: "I guess I could go find another sport...or I can go find another Coach."

And so began the journey of this 9th grader that would lead him to become the fastest 200-yard freestyler in the state of Texas by the time he was in 12th grade.

Who would then go on to become one of the best to ever come out of the University of Texas.

He would then go on to become an Olympian at the 1996 games in Atlanta (Gold medal), and actually Captain of the US Olympic Team in Sydney in 2000.

That 9th grader? Josh Davis.

And that pool where he was told to go find another sport?

It was renovated years later and ultimately renamed.

The name of that pool today? The Josh Davis Natatorium.

These stories are testimonies to the fact that success lies on the far side of failure. You only fail when you don't have the grit to endure just a little bit.
