Is it true that no programmers will be needed within 5 years due to AI?

As a software and website developer, I often hear the concern that AI will replace the need for programmers within the next 5 years. While it's true that AI tools like ChatGPT are becoming more advanced, the reality is that human programmers will continue to play a crucial role in software development for the foreseeable future.

Let me explain this in simple terms for the non-technical readers. Yes, you can now see short videos where someone inputs a prompt and an AI tool generates code. However, that code is often not ready for real-world use as a standalone solution.

For example, let's say you want to build a calculator app. ChatGPT can provide you with the basic code for addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. But it won't integrate those four modules into a cohesive, user-friendly app. A human programmer is still needed to write the code that ties all the functionality together, ensures smooth user experience, and packages it as a complete solution.

Real-world software problems are much more complex than a simple calculator. Developing a robust, reliable application requires a team of developers, QA engineers, project managers, and other professionals. AI may be able to assist in certain tasks, but it cannot replace the strategic thinking, problem-solving, and technical expertise that human developers bring to the table.

As for me , we I have gradually started to make use of AI. In fact, I have reached out to some of my clients to try using it and give feedback. The application is still in its baby steps but what I have noticed is that the clients use the AI tool for simple things, mostly knowledge gaps at their end. But if they have a complex situation, they reach out to me for assistance. AI is meant to assist you but it has its own limitations. So you cannot fully rule out developers or human beings in the system basically.

Over the next few years, I believe we'll see a significant increase in the use of AI in the software industry. They can utilize these AI tools to build a complex algorithm on top of it. Manual, labor-intensive jobs can be and will be replaced and we don't have to wait for 5 years for that. These include simple jobs like data entry. You won't see normal users entering and formatting data anymore. You can upload everything written on a piece of paper into your computer using Image Recognition technology and format it according to your needs. However, you will still require human intelligence to obtain meaningful results from the data that has been fed to the system. AI will be used to help the developer code the algorithm to turn the data into information but it cannot replace the human being.
