The True Meaning of Freedom: A Reflection on July 4th

As we celebrate July 4th, it's an opportune moment to reflect on the true meaning of freedom. Freedom is not a license to do as we please without regard for others; it is a profound concept that involves respecting the dignity of every individual. Our creator, who made us in His image and likeness, bestowed upon us this freedom. That is what gives us our ability for genuine love, out of our own free will. Without that free will, Love would be impossible.

Freedom: For What and From What?

When we think of freedom, we must consider both “freedom for” and “freedom from.” Freedom to love, to worship, to pass on our values and raise a family, to move and travel, to express unique and differing viewpoints, and to learn and grow to realize our full potential. Equally important is freedom from: poverty, injustice, harassment, subjugation, being ignored, and being used and treated less than human.

Balancing Individual and Collective Freedom

A society that values each person’s freedom must also respect collective freedom. This balance is achieved through laws that ensure one person’s freedom doesn’t infringe upon another’s. Compromises are necessary because absolute freedom for one can hinder another’s basic freedoms. Hence, certain basic principles, often viewed as divinely given, guide us. Our conscience is formed and nurtured with these principles, typically within the family structure. However, an individual’s conscience can be corrupted, by others intentionally, or due to brain malfunctions from disease, trauma, or accidents. If unchecked, such corruption can spread, leading to the rise of power centers detrimental to the larger society.

Addressing Corruption and Maintaining Hope

Despite society’s best efforts, some individuals with corrupt consciences hurt others, curtail other’s freedoms, and continue to influence others negatively, leading to societal breakdowns. Laws must be enforced, and some freedoms of such individuals curtailed, or they may even need to be separated from society to protect others. The hope remains that these individuals, created originally in the image of the divine, can be rehabilitated and eventually contribute positively to society.

Conclusion

Freedom is a multifaceted concept that demands respect for others’ dignity and involves both the liberty to pursue our own paths and protection from various forms of oppression. As we celebrate this Independence Day, let’s remember that true freedom requires a balance of individual rights and collective responsibility, guided by principles that transcend our human imperfections.

As a naturalized citizen of the USA, I have a profound appreciation for the concept of Freedom. Despite our great institutions of government, checks and balances, freedom remains fragile. I have also seen how these institutions are not immune from the corruption of conscience that I wrote about here. I deeply value the emphasis on human dignity, the value of human life, and tolerance for unique viewpoints. I'm grateful to those I've met along the way who embody the best of all this.
