Yesterday the world lost an absolute superstar. He was one of my greatest idols, but not for the reasons you think. A less known fact - he started in the advertising industry and went on to be the drummer in arguably the greatest rock n roll band in history - The Rolling Stones.
Read his NY Time Obituary NYTimes Charlie Watts
Whilst I did study Graphic Design, have given advertising design a great crack over my career, and I even did drum lessons in my late 20s (I’m rubbish) - what I admire about Mr. Watts the most is the fact he always knew who he was. He knew his worth, he was ambivalent about the fame and didn’t get swept up in anything but his dedication to do what he loved.?He didn't need to be upfront, didn't need to be the hero - but was the anchor of the band to steady keep everything on track.
“Through it all, Mr. Watts kept on keeping time on a simple four-piece drum kit, anchoring the spectacle of the Rolling Stones.” NY Times?
It is a timely reminder that you can follow your dreams and be the best without the need for the ego and limelight.

A lot of people don’t know, in the 60s Mr. Watts worked as a graphic artist for a London advertising agency, a skill which he used throughout his time with the Rolling Stones. Some of the most famous creative work from the stones was actually His - including stage sets and album covers.?
Graphic Artist, Drums, Humility and Commitment - what a legend.
In 2016, the drummer Lars Ulrich of?Metallica?(in my top three bands of all time) told Billboard that he wanted to keep playing into his 70s, he looked to Mr. Watts as his role model. “The only road map is Charlie Watts,” he said.
Today I feel that, and what a road map.?What a Legacy.
Beautifully said Ness. Thank you!

3 年If only there were more Charlie Watts in the world.
Beautifully said Ness...though I reckon if Lars wants to keep playing into his 70's he will need two new robotic shoulders! What are your top 3 Stones' songs? I'll go first - Brown Sugar - Paint it black - Sympathy for the devil The Stones always remind me of playing vinyl with my Dad, dancing around the back room like luncatics and singing out of key.
