True Balance is more than Work-Life Balance.

True Balance is more than Work-Life Balance.

A balanced life beautifully integrates work with our personal priorities and passions. Getting there is not a goal but a journey.?

So how does one take small steps? Well the starting point is to understand what are the different types of balance we need to achieve.?

  • Social Balance: Socializing beyond our work spaces is definitely healthy, but we also need to ensure that we do not compromise on our personal time. There is no one rule as to how many times a year we should touch base with each of our contacts. What is most crucial is the authenticity of our conversations that builds true bonds.
  • Physical Balance: Our body's needs, such as diet, rest, sleep, physical activity, and timely medical care need to be observed and catered to on a daily basis. Though simpler to achieve, this balance is the most neglected one and that is because the imbalance does not show any side effects in the short term.?
  • Emotional Balance: We need to understand and respond to our emotional states, and cope with stress, anxiety, and other emotional challenges. Educating ourselves about our own emotions, their root causes and the tools to manage them go a long way in striking this balance.?

Balance implies that there is always a winner & a loser. An either-or & never an and. Balancing acts sound like a delicate undertaking that hardly lasts. One side will always dominate. There is no equilibrium to be gained! Ritu G. Mehrish, CSP, might the true balance be work-life harmony? A term & concept that might fit much better to what the majority of us are striving for. Let’s stop striving for that mythical work-life balance & getting disappointing when we don’t manage to get our work-life into balance. Instead, let’s strive for work-life harmony which is whatever each of us wants it to be & thus is solely within our own power to achieve. The harmony part also means harmonizing with those you care about. Strengthening relationships in the face of ever-increasing work demands involves redefining what success really means to us. Just a thought ??
