Trudeau’s Resignation

Earlier today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced he will resign as the Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, while remaining as Prime Minister until a new leader is chosen. The Prime Minister also announced that he met with Gov. Gen. Mary Simon to prorogue Parliament until March 24, 2025.??
These announcements have significant ramifications across Ottawa and the political spectrum in Canada. They also raise important questions about what happens next, who will be the next Prime Minister and Leader of the Liberal Party, and how it will all happen.?
The Iris Communications team would like to recognize and thank Prime Minister Trudeau for his years of service to Canadians as the Prime Minister of Canada. While many Canadians will take the time to reflect on the legacy and impact of Prime Minister Trudeau, it is important to recognize that he spent more than nine years leading Canada through some of the country’s most difficult times – from economic challenges, three vastly different U.S. Presidential administrations, to the COVID-19 pandemic.??
What Happens Next? ?
The Liberal constitution will determine the party's next steps — and the next prime minister. Party procedure nerds, politicos, and pundits alike are currently gearing up for tussles over the proper path forward.??
While Trudeau is expected to remain the party leader until a new leader is elected, one alternative option is to select an interim leader. According to the Liberal Party constitution (under section 44), the National Board of the Liberal Party can appoint an interim leader in consultation with the federal Liberal caucus, although the outgoing leader can remain in the job until a new leader is found.?
The next anticipated steps are for the Liberal Party of Canada's Board to set a date for a Leadership Vote, establish the rules, and plan for a leadership contest. Throughout this time, leadership candidates are expected to start making their interests known to Canadians and Liberal Party members.??
At this time, information on the leadership contest is unknown, but based on the Liberal Party constitution, candidates will need to gather the required signatures and provide a nomination letter to the party president. Therefore, candidates interested in the role can expect to begin soliciting support, endorsements, and signatures to meet these criteria.??
Over the past year, as pressure mounted and speculation of the Prime Minister’s future swirled around Ottawa, a number of potential leadership candidates and successors have been floated, including:?

What It All Means?
Over the next few months, the Liberal Party's Board of Directors, in consultation with the federal caucus, will run a leadership contest to identify the next Prime Minister.??
As the party struggles to rebuild from internal divisions and difficult polling numbers nationally, the new leader will have significant challenges to overcome as they look towards an upcoming general election that must be called by October 2025, in addition to potential non-confidence votes by the opposition parties who have all committed to bring down the government.??
