Change can be tough. Unless it’s a change you want. A positive change is a “welcomed” change. Imagine if you just won the lotto…I’m sure you’d be happy with how different your world would look with your newfound wealth.

Which is why we are happy to share a change of our own. After 10 years of WCBconsulting.ca we are happy to announce our rebranding to Workers Comp Simplified.

Over the past few years our focus has shifted from WCB consulting to teaching employers how to manage and appeal claims more effectively using our simplified approach. We’ve specialized in taking a complex and scary system and breaking it down into principles that are easy to understand for any company to implement right now. Read More

Driver Hiring – How to Make Driver Changes Smoothly

Article written by Rob Barros, Chief Technology Officer & Chief Communications Officer, Leibel Insurance Group

Business is picking up and you need to hire drivers to keep up with the demand. This is a good problem to have, Right? Right!

Despite what some may think, adding a drive isn’t as simple as taking a picture of their driver’s license and sending it to your broker to have them added to your policy. While that is one piece of information needed, there are others that will help make the addition of your new driver(s) a smooth experience.

While Insurance Companies use the following information when rating new drivers, having these form part of your hiring practice not only ensures that you are finding the right candidates, it allows you to have them added to your policy sooner and on the road ASAP.

Electronic Logging Devices - Carrier Considerations

With the recent announcement made by the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA) regarding electronic logging devices and the firm commitment in regards to enforcing the ELD mandate for January 2023, the team at Pioneer Safety Solutions encourages carriers required to meet this requirement to stay diligent in asking if the ELD solution they are integrating, is the right solution for their business.

Other components carriers are encouraged to consider when deciding which ELD supplier to go with, should include:

  • Support - what support does the ELD supplier offer, once the contract has been signed?
  • Integrations - has the ELD provider partnered with any other solution suppliers, that can possibly be integrated into your business at a later time?
  • Contracts - consider what is included within your ELD agreement, and make sure this meets the needs of your business.
  • Supply Chain - after the decision has been made, and you are confident in the ELD supplier that you are going to partner with, consider how long will it take for the required components to your ELD system take to arrive, and be installed.

While there are a number of other considerations carriers need to process, carriers are encouraged to make the right decision for their business.

If you are interested in learning more about the ELD mandate, who is required to integrate a certified ELD, and more, then I encourage you to reach out to the team at Pioneer Safety Solutions.

The Worker's Contribution to Safety

Sienna Luard, Director of Business Development & Sales Operations at Wombat Software

Let’s talk about the worker’s contribution to safety. Safety messaging has focused on convincing leaders to step up: model the right behavior, do not send mixed messages about safety vs productivity, and create a culture of safety.

These are critical components of a safety culture. On the other hand, we need to consider a fundamental reality. Leaders are not the ones making the daily decisions to work safely.

Leaders have the responsibility for external factors that empower employees to make safe decisions. On the other hand, the internal factors that impact decision making are equally important. Read More

Written By Teresa Kiyawasew, Kiy HR Services

Do you have a structure when it comes to paying your employees for your small business?

If not, you may want to start, and here is why…

Have you ever heard that pay is not the number one motivator for employees to come to work? If that's true, why do we have to concentrate so much on making sure we pay right?

Well, I know that surveys suggest that there are other intrinsic motivators that keep employees coming to work, like a great team environment, a fun place to work, etc., but after being an HR professional for 24 years, I know that those keep employees motivate in combination with fair pay! The Client or The Driver?

Article By Dana G Smith, The Mindful Trucker

I often wonder sometimes who is more important these days. Is it the customer, or the driver? That’s a very good question! One that may have some serious debate.

The customer is the one that pays the bills for your business. They are the ones that we bend over backwards for, and do whatever it takes to get the job done, or should we? They demand everything from us whether we have it to give, or not. Some say that without the customer, we have no business. Is this a true statement? Maybe so! Read More

Two of One - Part 3 written by Jeremy Woolward, HSA, CTSP, Safety Officer

The HIERARCHY OF CONTROLS indicates how best to control hazards. Eliminating them is a priority, but if you cannot eliminate a hazard, you are required by law to control it. In commercial trucking, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to eliminate many hazards.

The primary hazard that commercial drivers experience is that of driver fatigue. Sitting for long periods of time, staring out at an open road for what can seem like forever, and driving at all hours of the day can take its toll. There’s no way to eliminate fatigue, but you can manage it by shifting how people look and relate to it. Fatigue Management & Journey Management Programs are effective administrative hazard controls because they educate and change how people work around the hazard. Read More

Stories From The Road

Don Taylor, Professional Driver, and Published Author

This book chronicles my thirty-plus years in the transportation industry. Starting as a taxi driver during a transit strike, to driving Long Combination Vehicles, measuring over 120 feet long, weighing over 130,000 lbs. My travels have taken me to all of the lower forty-eight states, and all Canadian provinces except Newfoundland. Some of the stories are quite humours, others are quite tragic. All have had a lasting effect on me.
