TRRS Geography Students Attend Mining Seminar at Academic City University College

On 27 November, 27 IGCSE & AS/A Level Geography students participated in an impactful in-person seminar organized by Academic City University College. The event, held under the theme Unpacking Galamsey: Uncovering "Treasures" in Responsible Mining, brought together key stakeholders to address the pervasive issue of illegal mining, locally known as "galamsey," and its far-reaching impacts on the environment, communities, and the nation's future.

Illegal mining is a significant concern in many parts of Ghana with far reaching environmental and socioeconomic consequences. This seminar created a platform for our students to engage with experts from diverse sectors, including civil society, government, academia, the mining industry, and traditional leadership. The discussions focused on several critical issues surrounding galamsey, such as: environmental degradation, public health concerns and socioeconomic drivers of the galamsey industry.

The seminar was not only an informative event but also a unique opportunity for students to engage in critical dialogue on one of the most pressing environmental issues facing the nation. By interacting with experts and contributing their ideas, students were able to gain a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding galamsey and the importance of enforcing responsible mining practices. Students left the seminar empowered to become agents of change. It was a reminder that addressing the challenges of illegal mining requires collective action and a shared commitment to building a better, more sustainable future.
