Trivia Things About Safety You Should Know-Safety Buzz

In my 2 decades of experience, I always believed that we belong to a non-glamorous field. Nobody wants to talk about EHS or Industrial Safety Or Road Safety or Safety on Social Media. But I was proven wrong, and to be honest, I am happy that I am wrong about something in my life.

I recently ran a poll on my LinkedIn profile, I simply asked " On Which platform do you discuss EHS, HSE or other safety-related topics"

And, here are the results

Near Misses Or Potential Workplace Hazard?

An employee walks down the hall, stepping over an extension cord stretched across his path. He turns a corner and nearly collides with another worker.

To avoid the collision, he steps to the side, spilling coffee onto the floor and inadvertently jostling a shelving unit, on which a tool placed close to the edge of the top shelf falls and hits the ground.

No one is hurt in this fictional scenario.

However, the employees in it experience multiple near-miss situations – any one of which could have led to a serious injury. Some people may be tempted to write off near misses as “no harm, no foul” situations.

We don’t look at what happened; we look at what could have happened,”

Although near misses cause no immediate harm, they can precede events in which a loss or injury could occur.

Employers that encourage the reporting of near misses gain an opportunity to prevent future incidents.

Workers should be trained on how to properly identify and recognize potential hazards. To help make it easy for employees to submit near misses and ensure Workplace Safety.

Safety is not an option, it must be a priority in everyone’s life.

The industrial sector is a fast-growing sector in India. Industries play a vital role in the economic growth of the country. Millions of people in India work in different industries.

With 500 million workers, the Indian labour force is the world’s second-largest. Industrial workers are involved in various operations on different machines in an industry or different industries.?

In the last few decades, the Indian industrial sector has significantly become more modern than before. The use of huge automated machinery has increased in almost every industry.

With the increased usage of this machinery and equipment, the safety hazards for employees have also increased. Industries are more prone to accidents than any other economic sector viz. Agriculture or Service sector.

Safety must always be the primary concern for the industrial facilities, from protecting employees from accidental injuries to safeguarding equipment from severe damage.

Industrial processes and operations use high-speed machinery, automated systems, and equipment that move heavy parts or handle hazardous material.

Industrial workers are exposed to various risks in the workplace. Hence, they should be provided with the required tools and equipment for their safety at the workplace.

Workers working in two different industries may need different types of safety tools. For example, a worker involved in welding or burning operations and a worker in a chemical or petroleum industry will require different sets of tools and equipment.

However, they require certain common safety tools and devices even after belonging to different industries. Safety gloves are one of them. In almost every large or small industry, gloves are essential safety tools.

Safety Gloves ?

Work gloves are also known as Safety Gloves or Protective Gloves. These are worn to save the user’s hands and fingers from cuts, splinters, blisters, heat or chemical burns, and skin punctures.?

?Gloves to keep hands safe against exposure to extreme temperatures, and wounds due to cuts, abrasions, splinters, friction, harmful chemical and biological contacts, or infectious diseases.

Safety gloves are used by industrial workers as well as working professionals in the food, medicine, and chemical industries, industries related to electric works, construction, welding and machinery industries, sports, and many other industries.

The type of gloves professionals requires, depends on the nature of work they do. Because different professionals encounter diverse conditions and hazards in different industries. So they need unalike gloves from each other.

?Work or Safety gloves can be made of fabric, leather, wool, rubber, latex, nitrile rubber, vinyl, neoprene, or metal. Gloves protect and provide comfort to hands, and maintain hygiene in the workplace.?

Type of safety gloves:-

There is a variety of protective gloves available to protect against potential hazards. The activity involved and the nature of the hazard affect the selection of gloves. In general, safety gloves fall into the following categories:-

?Fabric and Coated Fabric Gloves:-

These are made of cotton, nylon, canvas, or blended fabrics. The anti-Slip feature makes them useful for moving slippery boxes. They protect against dirt, blisters, abrasions, splinters, and chafing. They should not be used for sharp objects.??

Leather Gloves:-

Leather gloves are a matter of both safety and style. Some occupations like construction, automotive, and sports require the use of leather gloves. Industries that deal with heavy machinery and expose hands to possible hazards, use these gloves. Workers that work in low to very low temperatures, wear leather gloves to keep their hands warm.?

Metal Mesh Gloves:-?

These gloves are made of corrosion-resistant, stainless steel rings welded individually for maximum strength, flexibility, and durability. Metal Mesh gloves are generally used in the textile, metal sheet manufacturing, and food processing industries.

Rubber Gloves:-

Also known as latex gloves. Rubber gloves are great when working with chemicals and hot water. They are durable, waterproof, and elastic. Medical professionals and workers in the food industry use rubber gloves to avoid contamination and infection.??In hotels and restaurants, workers can dishwash in the hottest water with these gloves.

Nitrile Gloves:-

Nitrile is the superior material for disposable gloves and is unusually resistant to oil, water, fuel, and other chemicals. So are most suitable for those who have to be in contact with hazardous and corrosive chemicals frequently during their work. These are puncture-resistant and eliminate the risk of latex allergy reactions.

Polyvinyl Chloride(PVC) Gloves:-

Constructed from strong PVC coated cotton that will keep hands comfortable and safe, and withstand years of wear and tear. They are perfectly good for working with harsh chemicals and acids. Their anti-slip grip provides you with a better hold on things.

Neoprene Gloves:-

Made from a synthetic rubber called chloroprene. They are ideal for protecting against oil, flames, heat, and other harmful environmental factors. They are highly resilient to cuts and wear and tear from sunlight, weather, oxidation, and aging.

All the above safety gloves are used in different occupations for different work conditions and risk of damage involved. Professionals can use them as per their requirements.

Planned urban growth is alien to most Indian cities, and fire safety often takes a backseat.

Result: Dense outer areas packed with buildings inaccessible by fire trucks, and structurally vulnerable to fatal outbreaks.

For the first time in the country. The Blueprint’s focus was on three key areas: Capacity-building, regulations and compliance and awareness creation.
