Triunfo do Brasil yerba mate: organic and sustainable throughout its production cycle

Triunfo's yerba mate comes from several different stages, all of which are designed to produce our product without affecting the environment. Follow the article and understand what precautions are taken.?

Seeds?

Attention to the environment begins with the production of the seeds that give rise to Triunfo do Brasil's yerba mate seedlings. The seeds are collected from a century-old tree, which receives all the care it needs to continue producing quality.?

Once collected, the seeds begin their development in a specific compost. After a while, they are transferred to tubes, where they are grown in a greenhouse. Only when they are ready do they go into the field.?

Development in the field

Care for the environment is maintained throughout yerba mate's life cycle. The management employed is designed to maintain the quality of the leaves, but also to ensure that the areas in which the trees are located are not affected, thus resulting in a balance between production and preservation.?

Preservation of spontaneous species?

No chemical products are used to combat pests and diseases. Sustainable techniques are used that have excellent control results.?

One example is the preservation of spontaneous and native species, seeking ecological balance. Triunfo's yerba mate fields are located in the midst of araucaria trees and a nature rich in vegetation species. They are kept in the areas so that insects naturally control yerba mate pests and make this cover their habitat for permanence and propagation.?

This in itself contributes to pest control, where there is complete coverage and it is extremely beneficial to the soil, ensuring carbon fixation and protecting its microbiota, making the plants grow healthier.

Integrated Pest Management?

Another technique for this control is Integrated Pest Management (IPM). In addition to the search for a natural balance, the technique consists of selecting and recognizing what natural enemies are and what pests are, closer monitoring of the insect population in order to control it at the right time, biological technologies, and other precautions.?

In other words, not every insect should be considered a pest. And these may be the ones that control the populations that can be harmful to the yerba mate crop.?

The use of chemical insecticides can be harmful, causing an imbalance in the environment and having a harmful effect, making pests more resistant.

Fertilization?

Triunfo do Brasil's compost is made with 100% raw materials from the yerba mate industrial process. The plant is processed into leaves or extracts and the waste from the process is sent to the composting sector.

This material is treated by separating the raw material, controlling humidity and inoculating it with microorganisms. After preparation, the compost is left to ferment for a while and undergoes temperature stabilization.

After a while, it returns to the soil and is applied to herbs and nurseries, enriching the plants with nutrients.

Biological control?

Another method is biological control. Attentive to sustainable trends, Triunfo has been using this control since 2013, when the first commercial products of this type were available on the market.?

Since then, the technical team has been perfecting the application of the product. Specific strains are used to combat each infesting pest, thus ensuring efficiency in combating them.?

Care taken during harvest?

When harvesting yerba mate, certain precautions are taken, with both the plants and the workers in mind. For example, electric shears are used for pruning. This technology was recently created for the crop.?

For the plant, it is extremely beneficial, as it provides a more precise cut and faster healing. As a result, it contributes significantly to better production in the next harvest.?

But its benefits go further, as it is much safer equipment for employees, as it does not present a high risk of accidents, like the use of a machete, for example.?

It also offers better ergonomics, as it doesn't require them to stand in uncomfortable positions. With the use of scissors, cuts are faster, resulting in a much higher harvest yield.?

In addition, the so-called selective pruning of the stems is adopted. This type of pruning is also designed to improve the plant's productivity and recovery. Only the strongest branches with the most leaves are harvested. The others that have not yet fully developed are preserved.

Sustainability also when processing yerba mate?

Not only yerba mate is organic at Triunfo do Brasil. The eucalyptus used in the factory's boiler is also grown organically, i.e. without chemicals and in harmony with the environment.?

As well as being organic, the eucalyptus is turned into chips in the boiler, which reduces burning and carbon dioxide emissions. The use of eucalyptus chips is recommended because it is sustainable, since the tree - in planted forests - sequesters carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere throughout its seven-year life cycle.

Chips are small pieces of wood, made up of sheared splinters and obtained from trees such as eucalyptus and pine. Because it is the use of leftover organic matter, wood chips are an important type of biomass for energy production, used in furnaces and boilers. It ends up being a renewable resource for the industrial sector.?
