On January 27, 2024, the Snuneymuxw First Nation reached a momentous milestone, marking a significant event in their history. Chief Michael Wyse and the Honourable Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, commemorated the signing of the Interim Land Reconciliation Agreement. This groundbreaking agreement designates 80.09 hectares of land, referred to as the "Camp Nanaimo Lands on Te'tuxwtun," to be reserved for Snuneymuxw. The land, previously utilised by the Department of National Defence and the former Nanaimo Indian Hospital, will now undergo remediation and be justly returned to the Snuneymuxw People through the additions-to-reserve process.

Her diligent work in establishing protocol agreements set the stage for in-depth discussions and, ultimately, the signing of this momentous agreement.

The Interim Land Reconciliation Agreement has been signed after an extensive period of negotiations spanning over three decades and a history of alienation that dates back 170 years to the signing of a treaty in 1854. In 2003, the federal government initially planned to utilise the Camp Nanaimo lands as an incentive, requesting Snuneymuxw to relinquish their rights and title under the treaty of 1854. 1. Commemorative/Culture Zone: This area serves as a cultural and commemorative site, honouring the profound history of the land. Possible features could encompass a commemorative work of art or plaque, areas for community gatherings, art installations, or even a cultural centre.
2. Innovation Zone: This zone acts as a central hub for economic growth, fostering the development of local Snuneymuxw entrepreneurial endeavours. A remarkable aspect is the "Business Innovation and Research Park," a joint endeavour between Snuneymuxw and the Petroglyph Development Group (PDG). The goal in this area is to promote a wide variety of activities that create jobs for both members and other citizens, while also attracting Indigenous entrepreneurs and thought leaders.
3. Zone for Residential (Mixed Use) Properties: Emphasising the importance of housing for the Nation, this zone is specifically designated for a range of housing options, such as single dwelling units, multi-units, and townhomes, to meet the needs of both Elders and Youth. Designated sections within this area will be set aside for exclusive member housing, alongside housing available on the market. Additionally, there is a need to take into account student housing because of the close proximity of the DND Lands to the Nanaimo VIU campus, as well as the possibility of including greenspace and parklands.
4. Commercial Zone: Embracing a diverse range of commercial activities, this zone incorporates live-work commercial and residential areas to foster economic growth within Snuneymuxw.
5. Park / Greenspace Zone: Demonstrating a dedication to environmental preservation, this zone prioritises the safeguarding and advancement of green space within the development. The expansive parklands and greenspace will protect watercourses, wildlife corridors, important trees, and habitat areas. Other zones may also designate similar areas as Parks/Greenspace.
6. Highway Commercial Zone: The main objective of this zone is to create a diverse range of land uses that cater to the needs of the travelling public, tourists, and local citizens. Possible amenities encompass an additional Snuneymuxw fuel station, electric charging facilities, dining establishments, accommodations, casinos, and rest areas.
7. Health Centre Zone: Recognising the importance of health and wellness, this zone will offer a range of comprehensive health services that cater to mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. It includes medical service offices, clinics, care facilities, spiritual support sites, and healing centres. This area enhances the current Snuneymuxw Hulit Lelum Centre.
