The Triple Threat

When I heard about this concept, it changed the way I think about people. You know how it is… there are a lot of great ideas, but every once in a while, there's a huge one that can change everything in an instant. I think the thing that really amazed me when I read this is that it had never occurred to me before.
Are you a little mystified, curious? I’m going to lay it out for you…
It's called the Triple Threat. And I have to give credit where credit is due. It does not come from me. It comes from Scott Adams, the creator of the Dilbert cartoon series. Here's what he says:
It is really hard to be one of the best in the world at something. For example, playing in the NBA or creating a platinum album. Could you do it? Yeah, but the chances are really low and, in all likelihood, you'll never succeed just because the odds against you are so great.
But Scott Adams offers a diabolically brilliant alternative. Instead of becoming one of the 99-percentile “Best In The World” in ONE thing, become 80-percentile “Best In Class” at THREE things that go together, so now you’re the “Best In The World” at those three things.
What am I talking about? Well, here is the example Scott Adams gives, "I am not the best cartoonist out there, not by a long shot, but I'm a really, really good cartoonist. So, I put myself kind of in that 80-and-above-percentile.
“I am not the funniest guy out there by any means, but I'm pretty darn funny. I've developed that skill over many years. Again, I'll put myself in the 80-percentile or above.
“Certainly, I'm not the best judge of human nature, human character and what goes on in the office—because that's what Dilbert talks about—but I've worked in offices. I've studied offices. I spent a lot of years in that world. Again, I'm kind of in the 80-and-above-percentile.
“But look what happens when I combine the three, artist, funny man, knowledge of office. I put them all together and I have Dilbert. And Dilbert is one of the 99-plus-percentile, most successful cartoons every made."
And we’re talking huge.
Let's just think about this for one second. He's not the greatest artist. He's not the greatest comic. He's not the greatest kind of observer of what goes on in the office world. But Scott Adams is really, really good in all three and he's put the three together.
Wow. And I mean, wow, wow, wow! I really wish someone had shared this with me when I was a teenager. And the first thing I did when I read this was share it with my kids. It would totally have blown my mind and completely changed the way that I thought about my life.
By the way, if you're looking to reinvent yourself or think about 2.0 in your life, this applies to you. You may discover that you could combine two or three things and have an unbelievable next chapter in your own life, either professionally or personally.
