You'd think that Carl Icahn meddling with an airline would lead the news this week, but thankfully the travel industry is larger than one activist investor's need to be seen. This week had bigger news with 2023 numbers from Marriott and Hilton, among others .

We also got a sign that things may be changing at Tripadvisor, either through a sale or its largest shareholder taking it private.

Tripadvisor Is in Play

The prospect of a deal to acquire Tripadvisor hung over the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call Thursday and executives didn’t offer any further details.

Tripadvisor said Monday that it had formed a committee to evaluate proposals. One key question is how any transaction would affect a potential spinoff of Viator, Tripadvisor’s tours and activities brand – and growth engine.
