The Trip to Greece

The Trip to Greece

At DIADEM, we are dedicated to transforming the interaction of urban spaces with nature. Through our innovative green roof projects across Greece, we are enhancing the aesthetics of buildings, contributing to environmental sustainability, and improving quality of life.

Our journey through several notable projects in Greece demonstrates our commitment to pushing the boundaries of what green infrastructure can achieve, from educational campuses to luxury hotels, each project tailored to its unique environment.

Let’s take a look at some of our favorites.

Athens College

Athens College in Psychiko is a place of learning but also a pioneer in environmental design.

Its expansive green roof, the largest on a school in Greece, incorporates over 10,000 plants across 2,500 square meters. This living roof supports local biodiversity and is a daily reminder of sustainability in action, earning it the Platinum LEED certification, making it the FIRST building in Greece to achieve this feat.

The construction of the extensive DIADEM-150 creates a lush rooftop with over 20 different plant species, including sedum, aromatic plants, perennial herbaceous, and grasses.

Canaves Oia Hotel, Santorini

Canaves Oia Hotel combines luxury with sustainability through its stunning green roofs. In May 2018, Santorini got its new addition in Canaves Epitome, a luxury property above Ammoudi, blending Cycladic architecture with modern design.

The guests can enjoy magnificent sunset views accompanied by the green roofs. But apart from that, they also contribute to the hotel's environmental efforts by enhancing energy efficiency and reducing heat.

The landscape design at Canaves Oia Hotel, overseen by Greenwayshellas, integrates:

? extensive green roofs using DIADEM?-150, and

? DiaDrain-25H drainage.

Agemar Office Building

Commercial spaces aren’t excluded from green initiatives.

The Agemar Office Building in Athens is one example. Its rooftop and balconies feature lush vegetation that helps regulate building temperature, promotes cleaner air, and provides a serene retreat in the heart of the city.

Sustainability Challenges and Solutions:

? Vegetated Areas and Microclimate: Extensive green spaces on the ground, balconies, and a rooftop terrace address high-density surroundings. The smaller building features a vegetated facade, and underground parking enhances the microclimate.

? Water Surfaces for Cooling: Large water surfaces in front of the main facades provide evaporative cooling, reducing summer heat and minimizing air conditioning energy consumption.

? Geothermal Energy and Local Resources: Utilizing geothermal energy and local materials reduces heating and cooling energy consumption, promoting sustainability and supporting the local economy.

What sets this building apart is its commitment to environmental excellence, evident in the extensive use of green roofs that blanket its facade, earning it a prestigious Platinum LEED certification.

Xerolithi House, Serifos

Xerolithi House in Serifos blends architecture with the natural environment. This isn’t always an easy task.

Design prioritized subtle integration within the wilderness, resulting in a structure that melds with its environment. Predominantly subterranean, the building allows the indigenous vegetation to flourish atop it, fostering a harmonious coexistence.

The extensive DIADEM-150 system and Diadrain-25H drainage boards were chosen.

This approach ensures optimal water retention and ventilation, made to thrive in the arid, sun-drenched Mediterranean climate characteristics.

Designed to keep a low profile in the rugged landscape, its green roof helps maintain cooler indoor temperatures, contributing to the home's aesthetic and ecological footprint.

Angsana Corfu Resort & Spa

Opened in 2021, Angsana Corfu Resort & Spa showcases one more example of an efficient luxury and sustainability combination.

One of the resort's distinguishing features is its innovative approach to integrating green spaces within its infrastructure.

The Angsana Corfu Resort & Spa embraced the cutting-edge technology of green roofs, utilizing systems to create synergy with the environment and nature.

The project used a variety of green roof types to suit different vegetation levels and aesthetic desires. For areas requiring low planting, the extensive type DIADEM-150 was chosen. At the same time, the semi-intensive DIADEM-350 was applied in zones with low to medium vegetation.

The most immersive and lush resort areas benefited from the intensive type DIADEM-750, supporting greater substrate depths and a wider range of planting, from low to high.

This thoughtful implementation of green roof technology enhances the resort's sustainability credentials and provides guests with an unparalleled luxury experience amidst Corfu's natural beauty.

Our journey through Greece highlights how green roof projects shape more sustainable urban landscapes.

From Athens to Serifos, each initiative brings environmental benefits like improved air quality and biodiversity but also enhances the quality of life by integrating nature into everyday spaces.

As we continue to innovate and expand, our commitment remains strong to building greener, more sustainable communities.
