Triggers – Now that’s a loaded topic.
I must remind myself that anger is a secondary emotion. Before I act on negative emotion I try to take a couple of deep breaths. I try to identify what I am actually feeling since anger is the outcome and not the root.
I saw a situation play out on social media between two parties I admire and respect. I put myself as much as possible in the perspective of both parties. From the outside, I could relate to both parties. I am not going to give breath to that situation more than I have. But it got me thinking about triggers.
I know my positive reactions and interactions are spurned by verbal affirmations. When I feel appreciated and acknowledged I am willing to demonstrate and reciprocate through deeds. Thank you goes a long way with me.
When I was 21 my dad gave me Dale Carnegie’s book “How to Win Friends and Influence People.” Many of those principles still apply today. Giving honest and sincere appreciation can trigger a smile in the sternest people. I do not do well when people use a negative to motivate me. I also do not like the tough love approach. I believe life is tough enough. I fare better with possibilities over absolutes.
I am in no way saying that you need to walk around smiling every day and avoiding criticism. Anger has its place as well as other negative emotions. The point of this conversation is for you to identify what, why, and how your actions and reactions are being activated. ?Below are examples.
Positive Emotional Triggers:
?
·???????? Joy: Evoking feelings of happiness, delight, and positivity can create a strong emotional connection with your audience.
·???????? Inspiration: Offering inspiration and motivation can instill a sense of empowerment and drive to act or pursue goals.
·???????? Gratitude: Expressing gratitude or acknowledging appreciation can foster a sense of warmth, connection, and loyalty among your audience.
Negative Emotional Triggers:
?
·???????? Fear: Triggering feelings of fear or concern can capture attention and prompt individuals to take action to avoid potential negative outcomes.
·???????? Anger: Provoking feelings of anger or frustration can incite action or engagement, although it's important to use this trigger cautiously to avoid backlash.
·???????? Guilt: Eliciting feelings of guilt or remorse can compel individuals to reflect on their actions or behaviors, potentially driving them to make changes or seek redemption.
