Trigger would love my phone

My iphone 6 which I have managed to keep pristine for six years, has had a mishap this weekend and now has a small crack on its screen.

It’s from 2014 and I have resisted buying any of the new iphones since, why? Because of two reasons, one I no longer have a contract so getting a new phone isn’t part of the deal, secondly, I began to question why I felt the need to upgrade every year or two?

People take the mick at my phone’s abilities but I feel quite proud of it. So yes, my phone has a pretty crap camera and is nowhere near fast enough when doing virtually anything. But it works.

It’s a phone Trigger from Only Fools and Horses would love. Remember that chat where he tells Dave (Rodney) he’s had the same broom for 20 years. Except it’s had 14 new heads and 17 new handles! Well same for my phone, yes, it’s six years old but I’ve replaced the microphone, battery and touchpad.

Now I think with this latest misadventure I have a choice, is it time to finally upgrade? After all Apple like so many tech giants make things incompatible after a while. They force you to change. I HATE that.

Lots of new apps won’t work with my phone already and I am sure it will eventually just be able to make a call, hang on isn’t that what a phone does?

Or do I continue to keep it alive, get a second hand screen for little money from my great local shop and live on with the old beast a while longer?

I know the latter option is the one I will take.

If it works does it matter what it looks like? Or how fast it is? I hope by the time it does hang up for the last time, I will be able to recycle its valuable contents.

A typical iPhone contains tiny amounts of gold, silver, palladium and even platinum. It also contains aluminium, copper and rare earth elements like yttrium, lanthanum, terbium, neodymium, gadolinium and praseodymium. Phew.

Think of how much damage we do to the planet digging this stuff up every day to make sure you get a few more pixels on your camera for that Tik Tok post?

 Ready for that upgrade?
