The Trifecta Bookshelf: Talent, Vibrant Organizations, and Meaningful Business Impacts

By David C Forman, Author of Fearless HR and Fearless Talent Choices

This library is more than three decades in the making. I began assembling this collection in the late 1990s as I entered the stage in my career focusing on strategic human resources, human capital, and its impact on business/organizational outcomes.?It has taken many turns since those early days and is now depicted by the metaphor of The Trifecta:?The three factors that must be present for organizations to be successful in an age characterized by unrelenting change, global interdependence, and uncertain futures are?Talent, a Vibrant Culture & Organization, and Meaningful Business Impacts. ?All three must be present or the bet (and opportunity) is lost.

Of the roughly 200 references a few are holdovers from my earlier experiences as a principal in a global learning technology consulting firm, and later its President.?The lessons I learned from clients, colleagues, and ?looking beyond the blinders of just internal perspectives, have stayed with me to this day.?

There are several comments I would like to make on this bookshelf listing.?First, there is a long and distinguished literature on Talent, Effective Organizations, and Business Results.?Research and insights from many different authors have provided the scaffolding for what we know today.?That is the good news.?The bad news is that we don’t use and apply this wisdom as well as we should.?It is disappointing to me, for example, how often even best-selling authors fail to recognize the achievement of others that could inform their own work.?For example, a very popular book on motivation fails to discuss the work of Maslow and Hertzberg, among others.?It is not clear if these omissions were intentional or simply sloppy craftmanship; but the result is that we don’t continue to leverage and build upon what we know.?Our knowledge base begins to wilt when meaningful contributions go unrecognized.?We need to do better.

Second, my bookshelf is not exhaustive.??I am sure many of you have other great additions to the valuable sources and ideas that move our discipline forward.?A knowledge and experience base must continue to grow and adapt.?My hope is that this bookshelf is a good starting point for yours.?

And third, I am always asked about my favorite resources and books.?Virtually all of these sources have helped me, at one time or another, to understand more, solve a particular problem, or not get into too much trouble.?But there are several that stand out as having significantly influenced my thoughts over the years. ?Early on, there are three books that launched my interest in improving the potential of people and organizations.?These are The War for Talent, First Break All the Rules, and Good to Great. These books lit the fire, even if they may not be so pertinent today.?Half a dozen years later, I discovered Gary Hamel’s The Future of Management, and it still sits on my bookcase with over 50 post-it notes highlighting insightful passages.?My interest and thinking accelerated to a whole new level after reading this book.?And finally, almost a decade later, I profited from the wisdom and scholarship of Yuval Harari. Sapiens is probably the most personally meaningful book I have ever read. ?I came to realize what I had long expected:?Most of us know so little about what it means to be human.?The grasp of history and inter-disciplinary perspective he displays is, to me, astonishing.

Beyond specific books, I am also indebted to the long-term and continuing excellent work of leaders in the endeavor to improve individual and organizational performance.?Foremost among those contemporaries who have had a great influence on me are Dave Ulrich, Lisbeth Claus, Klaus Schwab, Jeffrey Pfeffer, Thomas Friedman, Angela Duckworth, Dan Pink, John Kotter, and Amy Edmondson.?These colleagues—and I have had the pleasure of getting to know some of them—have greatly influenced my articles, courses, and books that that have subsequently been used worldwide.?Thank you for letting me stand on your shoulders.

?Happy browsing.
