Trick or Treat? Facing the Future with AI, Inclusive Economics, and Financial Literacy

Halloween is a season of transformation—a time when we dress up, play roles, and share both treats and a few harmless tricks. But beyond the costumes and candy, we’re entering a much larger season of change, one defined by artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on our economy, jobs, and financial lives. At Operation HOPE, we see this transformation as an opportunity to drive inclusive economics—a vision of an economy where everyone participates and benefits, not just a select few. While AI and financial literacy are essential tools for navigating this era, inclusive economics is what ensures that these benefits are widely and fairly distributed.
AI and Inclusive Economics: Building a Future for All
AI is rapidly changing the landscape of work, learning, and opportunity. According to the McKinsey Global Institute, AI could add up to $13 trillion to global GDP by 2030, potentially increasing global GDP by 1.2% annually. However, this growth will be uneven if we don’t take active steps to prepare individuals across all economic backgrounds and skill levels. Here’s where inclusive economics—an approach we emphasize at Operation HOPE —comes in. Inclusive economics ensures that prosperity isn’t concentrated in a few hands but instead spreads widely so that every community shares in the benefits.
Inclusive economics doesn’t mean everyone needs to be a technology expert; it means creating access to economic and educational resources so people are prepared for the opportunities AI brings. Knowledge of basic financial concepts, like budgeting and saving, coupled with a foundational awareness of digital trends, can help everyone find ways to leverage AI for personal and community growth. AI’s potential to drive productivity and economic inclusion can only be fully realized when we prepare people to understand and benefit from these advancements.
Gaining a Career Edge with AI Knowledge
AI can also serve as a powerful asset in the workplace. Those who understand its capabilities and know how to integrate AI into their roles demonstrate leadership and adaptability—qualities that are critical in any career. From entry-level jobs to executive roles, staying informed about AI shows that you’re engaged with the trends shaping our economy, ready to innovate, and open to adapting for future success. In a study from the World Economic Forum, 84% of business leaders report that AI has already enhanced decision-making capabilities in their companies, underscoring how relevant AI knowledge is in today’s workforce. Showing that you’re tech-aware can be a career advantage, and it’s a powerful way to remain at the forefront of your industry.

Building Bridges Across Generations
Let’s bring these conversations about AI and inclusive economics into our homes and communities. Connecting over AI can be a unique way to build bridges across generations. Ask your children, grandchildren, nieces, or nephews what they know about AI. Chances are, they’re learning about it in school or using it on their devices daily. In return, share what you know about budgeting, saving, and financial literacy. This exchange of ideas enriches everyone involved, combining the excitement of new technology with practical wisdom that will help future generations succeed in a rapidly changing economy.
Leading by Example: Ensuring AI is Just and Equitable
At Operation HOPE, we’re committed to making sure AI doesn’t just create growth for some but opens doors for everyone. That's why Sam Altman and I co-founded the AI Ethics Council , where leaders across sectors in guiding the development of AI in a way that is equitable, moral, and just, with a particular focus on protecting communities that have historically been left behind. Our goal is to harness AI responsibly, ensuring it supports inclusive economics by driving opportunities accessible to all, not just the well-prepared few.
This commitment to an inclusive economy also means that AI should be used in a way that respects individuals’ rights, privacy, and opportunities. The Council’s work is rooted in creating ethical AI frameworks to protect people and communities as technology advances, working to close gaps rather than widen them.
