Lucien Clergue and Alain Desvergnes: two visionaries, without whom Arles would not be the capital of photography that it is today, as Patrick de Carolis, the mayor of Arles, pointed out. On July 4, 2022, as the 53rd edition of the Les Rencontres d'Arles festival opened, a special tribute was paid to them at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie, the first national art school dedicated to photography that they co-founded in 1982 and the latter directed.

In turn, the president of the School, Régine Hatchondo, the mayor of Arles, Patrick de Carolis, Yolande Clergue, wife of Lucien Clergue and the daughter of Alain Desvergnes, Gwenola Shenk Desvergnes, spoke of their commitment, while Michel Vauzelle, former deputy and mayor of Arles, first president of the School, recalled that in 1981, he had gone to the Elysée to suggest the idea to the President of the Republic, Fran?ois Mitterrand, of the creation of a photography school in France and in particular in Arles, where Lucien Clergue was already bringing the Rencontres festival to life.

Today, the establishment's library (open by appointment to all members of the public) bears the name of Lucien Clergue, "who formed its base" as Yolande, his wife, recalled. It was born in 1959, next to the darkroom and the workshop. It was his luxury! ?

In the beautiful amphitheater that bears the name of Alain Desvergnes, Gwenola Shenk Desvergnes recounted how her father's "sense of adventure" had led her to Arles in 1979. "More than training men and women of the image, he made the profession of photographer a profession recognized by a state diploma“. He would be very proud to see his school in this new building. ?

Jean-Jacques Karatchian - Leica Camera AG - professional department : My friend Lucien Clergue remains the greatest visionary of photography in the post-second war years. With Amédéo Turello, we have organized two Leica S workshops for the professional Leica department, these will be the last before illness takes over. Alain Devergnes was my closed interlocutor for many years, a high quality personality, an outstanding organizer, without him Sinar, best large format system, should not be there.

To energize and channel t the biggest photographic festival in the world, another visionary was needed: Michel Vauzelle ! Through his unparalleled intellectual courage, he convinced President Mitterand to found a national school of photography in Arles. Here is formed the heart of the talents of photography in France, under the marvelous light of Arles.

We are happy to see students working with our Leica medium formats and soon with our legendary Leica M11 and M monochrom. For the Leica brand, it is one of the most beautiful references in the world.

Today mayor of Arles de Carolis brilliantly continues this local culture linked to photography. It opens its doors, with red carpet, to the Luxembourg delegation. A new success story !
