TRIBUTE TO A SIOR ICON, JERRY FOGEL
Written by Matthew Severns, SIOR, CCIM
In 1941, the Society of Industrial Realtors (SIR) was born of a need for representation among the National Association of REALTORS? (NAR) as well as a way for brokers around the country to share resources in identifying viable warehouse and production space needed in anticipation of the World War II outbreak. The organization would grow from there, expanding in 1986 to include brokers specializing in office sales and leasing, thus establishing the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR Global).
Over the years the organization has come to be known as the foremost source for unparalleled service in the industry, with its members required to maintain a high standard of integrity, service, and ability to achieve the designation.?
In its long history, several SIOR brokers have made a lasting impact in their communities and with their clients. Through the SIOR network, many brokers have become well-known names, highly regarded and respected around the country for their long-standing membership and contribution. Earlier this year at Kessinger Hunter, we had the opportunity to celebrate such a member with the retirement of Jerry Fogel.
Jerry started his career in 1965 with Karbank Real Estate Company and became a member of SIOR in 1974. After a successful early career, he started J.P. Fogel & Company, which continued until its merger with Kessinger Hunter & Company in 2002. Jerry’s accolades and experience rank right up there with some of the great names in Kansas City’s rich commercial real estate history. When I joined Kessinger Hunter in 2006, Jerry quickly became a trusted mentor for me and provided invaluable guidance for what can be a steep learning curve when setting out in the brokerage business.? Jerry’s charm, knowledge, and measured response to the ups and downs of real estate are just a few of the things that made him truly effective. He had an ability to simplify an issue and work to a solution quickly to keep a deal moving forward. One of the most valuable things I learned from Jerry over the years was to be uncompromising in my service to my clients while also working cooperatively with the other side to get things done.
Jerry’s dedication and energetic approach to business translated to his life outside of the office as well. An avid outdoorsman, Jerry and his brother Guy are “members” of the exclusive club of people who have hiked all of Colorado’s 53 peaks above 14,000 feet of elevation. If you have ever hiked even one of them, you can appreciate such an achievement! Jerry is also one of the best baseball fans I’ve ever known, and we have shared and continue to share many games and conversations about our beloved Royals.
When I think about brokers like Jerry Fogel, a particular word comes to mind, and that word is legacy. The SIOR organization is built on the legacies of so many men and women since its early founding, and Jerry’s impact on our business is no exception and will carry on for years to come.?
The SIOR organization thrives on the legacy of enduring tradition in the Kansas City business community. The stated mission of SIOR is to inspire the industrial and office real estate industry by connecting people, knowledge, markets, and opportunities globally. When you think about your partners in the real estate business in Kansas City, you can be confident that people like Jerry Fogel have paved the way for a generation of industrial and office brokers who strive each day to build honest relationships and foster a thriving real estate environment.
