A Tribute to My Father For Fathers' Day

A Tribute to My Father For Fathers' Day

Today is Fathers' Day and I hope all of us take a moment to reflect on their importance in our lives.

As Father's Day approaches, I find myself reflecting on the extraordinary life of my father, —a Welshman whose journey through life was marked by resilience, honor, and an unwavering commitment to his family and service to others.

Born into a humble family in Wales, my father’s early years were shaped by hardship. He spent part of his childhood working in a coal mine, an experience that instilled in him a profound sense of determination, strength and resolve to speak and act out against injustice. Despite these challenging beginnings, he never lost sight of his dreams and aspirations.

When he came of age, he left his traumatic family conditions and joined the British Army, serving with distinction in the Middle East. His dedication and courage during these years were a testament to his character, setting the stage for a lifetime of service and integrity. After retiring from the army, proudly serving his country, but disturbed by the conflict and violence, he joined the British Foreign Service eventually becoming a Senior Health Inspector for Hong Kong in the 1930s and early 1940s.

The years of World War II brought unimaginable trials as my father, along with his wife and children, were interned as prisoners of war by the Japanese in Stanley Camp in Hong Kong. I was born in the camp. They endured the harshest conditions for almost four years, yet my father remained strong and resilient, a pillar of strength and hope for his family. His altruism, integrity, and courage shone brightly during these dark times, providing a beacon of hope for others.

Beyond his remarkable achievements and the adversities he faced, my father was a man of kindness, compassion, and humility. He was fiercely devoted to his wife and children, always placing their well-being above his own. His life was a testament to the values of service and selflessness.

My father was not just a man of valor; he was a man of warmth and wisdom. I cherish the moments we spent together—the times of learning, laughter, and love. He taught me the value of a liberal education and he shared his great knowledge of literature, history and music with me. His firm but loving guidance and unwavering support have shaped who I am today. In his presence, I always felt a profound sense of security and belonging.

On his death bed, true to nature, he professed his love to me and encouraged me to support and protect my mother, as he did all his life.

As I honor my father this Father’s Day, I am filled with immense gratitude and pride. He was the finest man I have ever known, a true exemplar of what it means to live with honor and love. His legacy continues to inspire me every day, and I am forever grateful for the lessons he imparted and the love he gave so freely.

Thank you, Dad, for everything. Your memory will always be a guiding light in my life.

Ray: I echo the sentiments that you will receive and do understand a bit of your history in Stanley Camp in HK. When I worked there I often visited the war cemetery in Stanley and took my cubs and scouts to that place of honour for Remembrance Day so that they could understand the sacrifices that Canadians made to keep them free. Thank you for sharing. We know how deeply sensitive this is and we are so pleased that your father’s legacy lives on!
