Tribute to Fielding Babb – (1935 – 2017): The Artist, The Man, The Bajan
On February 11, 2017, Barbados lost one of its more prominent icons in the arts; the artist, the man, the true Bajan, Mr. Fielding Babb.
In his own words, he would always say to those he mentored, “never paint for the love of money, do it for the love of it [the art].”
Fielding’s impressive body of work is a true testament to the deep love and passion he held for this beloved rock, for he was able to capture and archive the built and natural heritage of our island home with detailed precision, nuance and passion.
On behalf of my family and the wider Barbados Labour Party family, I would like to extend sincerest condolences to the relatives and friends of Mr. Babb, and indeed to all of those in our cultural and artistic community who will surely miss having him around.
May you rest in peace, Fielding, and we thank you for your kind spirit and your beautiful work of art that will remain with us for many generations to come.
