Triangle of Purpose for Podcasters

Years ago I created a formula called "Triangle of Purpose" for podcasters to clearly understand why listeners would mentally subscribe to their podcast, why guests would want to be on their show and why podcasters would keep going even when they get tired or have a lot going on.

What is a "Triangle of Purpose"?

The Triangle of Purpose is the purpose of your podcast for;

  • You
  • Your Listener
  • Your Guest

What is the MAIN?selfish?purpose of your podcast for you?

(this can't be "help people" - it has to be something selfishly for you or your business)

Here are some examples of a You centric Purpose;

make money, thought leadership, attract clients, sell books, customer retention, company recruiting, sales credibility, fame, networking, content repurposing, to, be relevant, to learn a new skill

What is the MAIN purpose of your podcast for your listener?

Here are some examples for why people would listen;

to be educated, to be entertained, to be connected, to be informed, to be inspired, to accelerate in their career, to heal, for personal growth, to make money, to be creative, to know you

What is the MAIN purpose of your podcast for your podcast guest? (if you choose to have guests)

Here are some examples for why guests would be keen to be on your show;

to get exposure, to attract new customers, to gain thought leadership, to meet you, to speak to their internal purpose, to elevate their mission


When you have this trifecta map defined it results in abundant inbound guest requests, a soaring audience of listeners and everlasting energy to produce your podcast for years to come.

Hey Espree Devora ?? , great post! It’s all about creating value for everyone involved, after all. What value do you think a new podcast can provide for the guest? Seems like guests mostly get value from exposure (in one way or another), but if the podcast is unknown yet, there is no exposure for the guest…
