TRIANGLE KNOKKE is a Pop-up gallery by Harlan Levey Projects, Waldburger Wouters and Louis Buysse, aiming to add to the existing contemporary art initiatives in the luxurious seaside city by bringing internationally acclaimed artists to the Flemish coast.?

The curatorial focus creates cross-generational conversations between leading artists such as Lynn Hershman Leeson and Emmanuel Van der Auwera or Mark Dion and Haseeb Ahmed, as well as presenting some of Belgium’s most exciting young artists including Elen Braga, Sean Crossley, Marcin Dudek and Julian Saudubray. In 2021 and 2022, included artists have exhibited at leading museums and events around the world including The Smithsonian Museum of Art (Washington DC, USA), The New Museum (NY, USA), WIELS Center for Contemporary Art (Brussels, Belgium), The House of Electronic Arts (Basel, Switzerland), and the Venice Biennale (Venice, Italy), amongst many others.

The project builds on earlier collaborative nomadic interventions by the organizing galleries such as “6 Degrees” (Liebaert Projects, Kortrijk), “Salon D’O” (Thermae Palace, Ostend) and “BXL x Emergent” (Emergent, Veurne). Hosted in a brutalist setting, the inclusion of exclusive objects and interior design by Studio Khachatryan adds a cross-collecting element while creating a unique gallery setting in the city.

HOW DID IT START?

This summer I gave my career another twist - opening a Pop-Up Gallery space in Knokke.

After leaving the auction house Lempertz, the space came on my radar at the beginning of the year 2022.

I was thinking:

“how can we disrupt Knokke with something original but in the meantime meaningful and important?”

I reached out to Harlan Levey whom I met after a great talk in the National Botanic Gardens of Meise - near Brussels on 10 October 2022.

We are having many touchpoints in our life story, passion for arts and generally speaking values of life. Furthermore, his gallery program became an enrichment to me by getting closer to him and his artists.

As a result, we brought our heads together and formulated the concept followed by the introduction of a third gallery, Tim Wouters from Waldburger Wouters (based in?#brussels?and?#basel?)

After making good agreements, we signed the space which was still under construction and will be available to us in casco condition.

However, as constructions involve many challenges and disappointments, we were delayed week by week.

Perseverance was the key - even stubbornness was challenged to its limits.

The result?

A qualitative selection of artists with great CVs represented in major institutions and collections. (find the list of the artist below)

• A unique brutalist space disrupting -or let’s say contrasting the luxurious boutiques in Knokke.
• Enriching the people of Knokke with unique pieces of art.
• Great partners.
• Great friends.
• Freedom!
