When people ask what I majored in at the Naval Academy, I usually tell them about my B.S. degree.
But the truth is, I majored in leadership.
I seized every leadership opportunity that came my way, embracing each chance to learn and, yes, sometimes fail quickly. These experiences were invaluable, shaping my approach and resilience. I further honed these skills in the Navy, and later at IBM and Microsoft, where I continued to build on the foundation of leadership that started at the Academy.
In my experience…leadership has three attributes that stand out like guiding stars:
Learning;
Leverage; and
Consistency.
These aren’t just buzzwords; they are the backbone of any effective leader.
Imagine a leader who never stops learning.
They don’t see the world as a static place. Instead, they embrace change and are always on the lookout for new ideas. This kind of leader doesn’t just react to changes; they anticipate them. They read, they listen, they ask questions. They know that staying informed is key to making smart decisions. This constant hunger for knowledge sets a powerful example for their team. It creates an environment where everyone feels encouraged to grow and improve.
Now, think about leverage.
A great leader knows how to use their resources wisely. They recognize the unique strengths of their team members and make sure those strengths are put to good use. This isn’t about micromanaging. It’s about trusting your team and knowing when to step back and let them shine. By leveraging the skills and talents around them, leaders can achieve remarkable results. They make strategic decisions that drive the team forward, all while ensuring everyone feels valued and empowered.
Consistency, on the other hand, might seem less glamorous, but it’s equally crucial.
A consistent leader is reliable and trustworthy. They don’t send mixed messages or make erratic decisions. Their team knows what to expect and can rely on them for stability. This predictability creates a safe space for team members to perform at their best. When the direction is clear and steady, everyone can focus on their goals without the fear of sudden changes throwing them off course.
But here’s the magic: these three attributes don’t just stand alone.
They are deeply interconnected.
When a leader is committed to learning, they become better at leveraging their resources. They understand their team’s strengths and weaknesses better. This understanding allows them to be more consistent in their actions and decisions. And when they are consistent, it creates a stable environment where continuous learning and effective leverage become possible.

In essence, learning, leverage, and consistency form a virtuous cycle.
Each one strengthens the other, creating a powerful synergy that elevates leadership to new heights.
Leaders who embody these attributes inspire their teams, drive innovation, and lead with authenticity.
So, if you’re looking to improve your leadership game, focus on these three pillars.
Embrace the joy of learning, harness the power of leverage, and be the rock of consistency for your team.
Your leadership journey will not only be more effective but also more fulfilling. And that’s something everyone can strive for.??
