Power Converters are installed all over the world for the Alternative Energy sector. So these converters are a common part of any Alternative Energy Power Plant such as Solar Farms, Wind Turbines and Fuel Cell Systems. They have in common that the power produced is "injected" inside the Grid Systems. Remote areas where the Power Grid has not being incorporated yet, so no need to "inject" power to electric systems; Alternative Energy Power Plants used in these remote areas also have Power Converters however they operate in Stand Alone Operation Mode.
Converters used to "inject" the Energy transfer from the alternative source to the grid, they need to be capable of grid synchronization and ride through fault conditions. In all the cases they must be able to interact with grid voltage without tripping, in some cases if the grid had a extreme fault condition they must able disconnect and keep "critical loads" alive.
In this article we are going to describe a Tri-Phases Computer Controlled Function Generator. One of the application for this Generator among other, will be testing Power Converters Protection and Fault Drive Through Capabilities. In a previous article was explained ride through fault conditions features.
Next block diagram will show the basics:
Sign signals will be used to select the adequate MOSFET couple to power the Transformer. The following figure shows 1/2 section Generator output:

Phases S & T are identical.
The transformers can be connected in Delta or Wye.
Also the transformer can be selected according the application, on figure above, transformer has multiple output with tap selection. For a Tri-Phases system will be required two additional Transformers, see following figure:
The following link will allow you to see the 3D model of the Transformer used in this Function Generator. Also the electronics associate with the Driver for it.
