Tres Birds Joins Colorado Mass Timber Coalition Spearheaded by Gates Family Foundation

The Gates Family Foundation has assembled a broad coalition of public and private institutions to form the Colorado Mass Timber Coalition (CMTC). Tres Birds is proud to be among them.

It is the mission of CMTC to accelerate the adoption of mass timber products and technology in Colorado's next generation of buildings, as well as to create a future for mass timber products that are made in Colorado, using local timbers, including timber from efforts to improve forests and watersheds. There is a tremendous opportunity to coalesce the talent and expertise that exists in Colorado and beyond in the fields of forestry and forest management, forest products, manufacturing, design, engineering, finance, construction, and real estate development.?The significance of the effort is underscored by the unprecedented level of investment that will be made in coming years to improve forest health in Colorado through interventions such as thinning, prescribed burning, and other approaches.?It has never been more urgent to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and embodied carbon in buildings.

Mass timber can be an important element of Colorado’s climate strategy and economic future. Mass timber can sequester carbon for long periods of time, replace more carbon-intensive building materials, create additional efficiencies in the design, construction, and delivery of development projects, create structures that are beautiful and healthier for their occupants, and potentially contribute to rural economic development.?

Increased utilization of mass timber can help to expand demand for wood products, an essential element of efforts to accelerate the rate of forest and watershed restoration. Currently the timber resources being harvested to restore forest health have largely no economic use. As a result, most of this fiber is being collected and burned in the forest. With a United States Forest Service ?10-year strategy to treat 50 million additional acres of high-risk firesheds across the U.S., including the Colorado Front Range as one of the top ten forest landscapes to be targeted, it is critical to find more viable uses for this material.
