Question: Is Carnation's Breakfast Essentials essential for you?
Sometimes a thumbs up or a floating heart doesn't do a product justice. So, instead of those, I'll give you my recommendations in (3) winks and (3) blinks. Winks mean that a product doesn't stink, while blinks mean that you may want to rethink that purchase. But it's still your choice. Remember that.
- Just add liquid. This super convenient powder asks for one ingredient: any liquid of your choice. Carnation recommends milk, of course. But if you're lactose intolerant (like me), using lactose free milk is fine, too. FYI. For cold mornings, I like to warm up the milk. Reminds me of those winter mornings when I was a kid, drinking hot cocoa before school. Oh, the nostalgia!
- Long shelf life. As of this article's publishing (10/05/2023), you may see boxes with the expiration date September 6, 2024. So, if you're worried about buying a 40-count box, you can take a breath. You have 11 months to finish 40 pouches.
- Nice price. Right now, Sam's Club has the best value for your money. As of today's date, October 5, 2023, a 30 pack is on sale for $4.91. That's 16 cents per pouch. (Usually, this sells for $9.44; 31 cents per pouch.) Costco has the next best value, selling a 40 pack for $12.79 (32 cents per pouch). If you shop at Walmart or use Amazon Prime shipping, both retailers sell a 22 pack for $10.81 (49 cents per pouch). (FYI. If you buy this box on Amazon, make sure to check each pouch for holes. I've run into this problem a couple of times.) And if you're in the mood to try this drink mix, before buying a larger box, Target sells a 10 pack for $5.49 (55 cents per pouch).
- Too sugary. With 15 grams of sugar before adding milk, this drink packs a sugar wallop. Besides that, the box recommends using only 1 cup of milk. This makes the drink extremely rich and thick. So, instead of this, I use 3 cups of lactose free milk. This helps with the thickness and dulls the rich flavor, too.
- Clumps. This powder doesn't dissolve well in hot or cold beverages. You really have to stir this drink or use a blender if you want to get rid of clumps. I usually stir for two minutes, and I find the sediment sits at the top. This works for me, only because I drink with a straw. But if you don't use a straw, the effort you need to lose the clumps may be something for you to consider.
- Not a meal replacement. With the high sugar content, it's easy to feel like you can go without a meal. But what comes after the sugar high? Yes, the sugar crash. So, you may want to eat a good meal, and then use this drink mix as an in-between meals snack. Usually, I eat a good breakfast, and then have this drink before lunch. That's just me. You do you, okay!

In all honesty, this drink is one of my favorite go-to beverages. It's quick. Convenient. And, of course, the clean-up is a breeze. Is it essential, though? Well, with my intense Zumba and kickboxing sessions, let's just say I'd rather have this drink mix than not have it.
