"Trendy" Wen Dee Reviews Archer Season 14, Episode 4 "Chill Barry"

Warning: Spoilers are kept to a minimum. I don't go into great detail, that way you can have that joy all to yourself. But yeah. This is a review. So, you've been warned.

FX's Archer is one of my favorite TV series in late night comedy history. It's a fun adult spy story that doesn't take itself too seriously. A trait I can both respect and appreciate.

The story: Archer is a spy. No. Scratch that. He's "the world's greatest spy," according to himself. With his smart mouthed crew by his side, he tackles missions in his signature tactical turtleneck--the "tactalneck." And thwarts the baddies, as long as it doesn't get in the way of his personal time. He's smooth, conceited, and a real bad egg to his pals. But they follow him to the ends of the earth, just to make sure he doesn't blow it up.

Episode 4: Barry returns as a mini fridge and brings Other Barry with him. Is Archer ready for the inevitable beatdown? Or will "Artifridgal" Barry step up to save his "tactalneck?"

Moving forward. This review comes in (3) winks and (3) blinks. Winks mean that the series deserves some extra love for that bit, while blinks mean, "What did I just watch?"

The (3) Winks

  1. Barry. Yes, Barry (voiced by Dave Willis, "Steven Universe" and "Ballmastrz: 9009") returns to The Agency as a mini fridge. Also, he's sporting a similar red tint as his signature sweat tracksuit. Oh, the feels! And the chills.
  2. Pam breaking the 4th wall. When Barry reveals himself, Pam breaks the 4th wall and says, "Now that's what I call a cold open!" To wit, Archer responds, "Who's that for?" Still on a roll, Pam throws up some jazz hands and smiles pretty for us, the audience. Thank you, animators!
  3. Other Barry. Yes! Other Barry (again, voiced by Dave Willis in a dual role) returns as this episode's overarching villain. And he's way more evil than last time. Seriously. Instead of trying to enslave humanity, he's dreaming bigger. Oh, he still wants to take over the world, of course. But this time he plans to wipe out every last human, so the world only belongs to the robots.

The (3) Blinks

  1. Making fun of Cyril. I'm not a fan of this troupe. Even if it's their "key to solidarity." The whole bit is exhausting, and at this point, plain mean.
  2. Ray in a van. Again, Ray is left to waste his robot energy elsewhere. This time, he does it in a van. I understand he's working surveillance for Lana and Zara, but he's so bored, he makes popcorn.
  3. Barry sets up something bigger. This is episode 4, the halfway point of the season. That's why Barry's big tech creator reveal feels like such a downer. With only 4 episodes left, it's a plot we may never see resolved. Now that's just mean!

Overall rating: 4.0 out of 5.0.

In all honesty, I like this episode. And yes, it's because of Barry and Other Barry. They make this episode worth watching.
