Trendy Title Alert: Prompt Engineering

Trends touch every industry from fashion to food, and the job market is no exception.?

We saw the rise and (quick) demise of “crypto jobs” on Google Trends in 2021, and now the newest trend in job titles is AI-related.?

And while there are some well-founded?fears that AI will come for certain white-collar jobs, the opposite can also be true, and the AI revolution is in fact creating new jobs. We’ve come full circle, and it turns out robots can be friends, not foes. What a time to be alive.?

It has been an interesting roller-coaster ride for generative AI products in the last year. For example, when ChatGPT was launched in November, the software was hailed as “powerful, sophisticated, imaginative, and possibly even dangerous.” But lately, ChatGPT chatter has become a bit lackluster, due in part to updates that seem to have made the platform worse.?

Current limitations aside, updates will continue to roll out, and the software will likely improve over time. And?for those who understand and have the patience to properly prompt the chat application, there could be exciting opportunities on the horizon.

The title “prompt engineer” is picking up steam, and companies from Microsoft to Atlassian to Gannett are looking for or have already hired a GPT user extraordinaire. Responsibilities include developing and optimizing AI prompt models and experimenting to improve prompt generation — and salaries can be upwards of $300,000. Not too shabby.

If you’re interested in becoming a prompt engineer, now’s the time to act. Google Trends shows that over the past year in the U.S., searches for “AI Jobs” have roughly quadrupled, with “Prompt Engineering” and “Jobs in AI” also showing large spikes.

And just to drive the point home, let’s look at ZoomInfo data around the title “prompt engineer”...

WE ?? CHARTS?

Using ZoomInfo data, we put together a chart each month to show you trends and changes in the industry.?

We used the ZoomInfo platform to look at the increase in the title “prompt engineer” over the last year. Since August of 2022, there’s been an over 8,000% increase in folks who hold the title. For reference, ZoomInfo has over 600 million job titles, so the number of prompt engineers is tiny in comparison, but that increase is pretty staggering.

What do you think? Is “prompt engineer” the next big job trend? Are you adding “proficient in ChatGPT” to your resume?
