Innovate UK Grant Supports Female-Led Startup Building Diverse Biomarker Database

S?kerData, a female-led digital health startup based in London, has secured a notable part of a £6.2 million grant from Innovate UK. This funding will boost their project to create an innovative biomarker database, enhancing drug discovery and personalized medicine.?

The project aims to fill the diversity gap in clinical trials and genetic research, historically centered on European populations, by including more diverse global populations, especially in diseases with varied outcomes like breast cancer. Innovate UK's investment supports S?kerData's mission to develop the world's most comprehensive and diverse biomarker database, marking a significant advancement in inclusive pharmaceutical research.

Despite fundraising challenges, women-led venture capital funds saw growth in 2023, capturing around 3% of the global $107 billion raised by venture funds, a rise from less than 2% in 2022, per Venture Capital Journal. This growth, albeit modest, highlights a positive trend in U.S. venture capital for women-founded companies. Supportive measures such as incubators for women founders and funds focusing on underrepresented entrepreneurs have fueled this uptick.?
