Trends in Dentistry: the All-On-4 Procedure?

In recent years, the All-On-4 dental implant procedure has been a successful solution for patients who have, “hopeless teeth;” where nothing can be done to save them and all need to be removed. The procedure requires, “four implants in the upper jaw and four implants in the lower jaw” to be strategically placed in the mouth to support a new set of teeth made by a dental laboratory technician that snap on top of the implants.
The treatment, in my opinion, is an attractive solution when all teeth need to be removed – not when teeth can be saved. Dentistry used to take great pride (and still does) in working hard to maintain and save teeth. Today, few dentists choose the All-On-4 treatment plan, even if they have to sacrifice good teeth.
I believe in providing my patients with affordable options and above all, a treatment plan that’s best for their health.
On that note, I recently had a patient who needed extensive dental work. She was told to remove all of her teeth by two dental offices, but was not provided with the positive and negative side effects of doing so. After our consultation and reviewing her X-rays, I came to the conclusion that most of her teeth could be saved. Not only was she happy to hear this, but relieved and grateful to have a treatment plan that worked for her and fit her budget. She could not afford the All-On-4 procedure did not want to go into debt.
It’s important that patients choose a treatment plan that fits their needs, expectations and yes, their bank account. There’s nothing wrong with the All-On-4 treatment, if it’s the last resort. It’s when a patient sacrifices good teeth that it becomes an issue for me.
As always, it’s important to do your homework and know what the alternative solutions are to your case. It isn’t advisable to consult with one dentist – it’s important to consult with a few. Be a smart consumer and beware of individuals pushing “in-office” financing options.
