Trends for 2019
It is that time of year! Trend Time! All over the internet you are seeing predictions for the big trends for 2018, so I thought I would throw in my few thoughts.
I came across this painting Hendrik Reekers, a Dutch master, and i thought that it pretty much sums up a lot of what I think are becoming the big trends for next year.
Color: The rich deep earth tones of this painting summarize the big color trend for next year. Rich browns, and deep greens with black and then accents of light in off whites and parchment.
There is a sensuality that is key to this palette that I believe is an instagram reaction, no more all white backgrounds with vintage furniture and sweet pops of color, I think this signals a return to deep hues and subtle color combinations that work together to create a space that is bot deep and luxurious.
Texture: Very much like you see in the painting, textures will be a blend of velvets and silks that signal a return to opulence and luxury. Coupled with this bright sparkle accents, whether its crystal or glass.
I am expecting to see more pattern as well, but less of the perky prints we have now to a more compelling and thoughtful texture with old world weaves and tapestries.
Visiting a stone yard yesterday, the examples of more “leather finish” and honed slabs were everywhere. Perhaps this textural change will finally swing interest away from white Calcutta to a more spirited color choice.
Metals: I think that metals will continue in their popularity, I think the days of shiny brass are coming to a close and will be replaced with more of a brushed or burnished look. Lighter color metals are still secondary players but the rise of Platinum as a choice is maybe a sign that interest is turning their way again.
Style: Here my prediction may be somewhat controversial. I think we are about to see a big uptick in the interest of European design again. Less of the classic Villa and Chateau style we saw in the 90’s and early 2000’s and a more modern, eclectic twist on that style. The cover of the Sept/Oct Veranda Magazine is a perfect example.
